Dealerships are going to let the last 18 months of it being a seller’s market go to their heads long after supply outstrips demand again.
The time where acting like every new vehicle rolling in is a Fabergé egg to sell to the highest bidder is over and while there are still some supply chain issues, those are for certain features for higher trims. Otherwise, there’s no ‘rare builds.’ The F150 is a mass produced factory vehicle and the crew cab shortbed is the most produced configuration. While there are still clowns paying over MSRP for hybrids like the Maverick and I have no doubt that Lightnings will be sold for six figures, the F-150 is already half way through the 2022 model year and there’s enough dealerships that you can order a 2023 truck exactly how you want it in a few months for way less than MSRP that it’s silly to pay full MSRP now from a dealer that wants to manipulate you.
If this dealership wants to play games with you, play them right back. Tell the salesperson to refund your deposit right away and when he asks why; thank him for his hard work but that he lost the sale because his sales manager is a dildo. Make sure to be extra polite but also firm in that you want the deposit refunded.
You already did good by getting a loan through your bank; taking away the dealer’s leverage over you on that aspect of the sale. Get some other offers on your trade and see if you can get any local or online dealers that will offer over $29K for your trade.
It’s quite possible a different manager from the dealership with the truck you are interested in will call back and try to make the original MSRP plus tint/bedliner and trade-in deal work. If between now and then there’s a better offer for your trade, have them change the original deal to reflect the better trade-in value. Then tell them to knock $1,200 off the MSRP because you are going to have the tint and bedliner done yourself. If they balk at you changing the deal, remind them that you had already agreed to a price, were ready to head over to pick up the truck and that they were the ones that didn’t honor that deal. You must be hammer or anvil; don’t let the dealer be the one hammering you. Just be sure that you are professional and unemotional even if the dealership employees lose their shit when you turn the tables on them.
Full MSRP isn’t a good deal, Ford makes nearly a million or more trucks a year. The supply was disrupted and they still made nearly a quarter of a million F-150 trucks in 2021. However the reduction in supply of a hundred thousand or more trucks has caused a frenzy to buy new vehicles as though it were Cuba in 1959. Don’t worry though; Ford is still making trucks in 2022 and there will probably be plenty of 2023s to go around too. Full MSRP only seems like a good deal now because only a short time ago, people were paying over MSRP and happily.
If they refunded your money and still have the truck this coming Thursday; the last day of the month and you haven’t seen any trucks you like more in between. If they are reasonably close, drive over a couple hours before closing and tell them that you want to buy a truck. Let the salesperson suggest to you to buy the one that you are interested in and see what deal they are willing to make with you there in person. You are already in their computer, so don’t let them know your full name until you go through the Kabuki theater of getting prices. If they still can’t manage to sell you a truck then, it means that they are more interested in screwing over customers than selling trucks. Walk away and find a dealership that actually is in the business of selling vehicles.
Good luck!
