Dealerships are going to let the last 18 months of it being a seller’s market go to their heads long after supply outstrips demand again.

The time where acting like every new vehicle rolling in is a Fabergé egg to sell to the highest bidder is over and while there are still some supply chain issues, those are for certain features for higher trims. Otherwise, there’s no ‘rare builds.’ The F150 is a mass produced factory vehicle and the crew cab shortbed is the most produced configuration. While there are still clowns paying over MSRP for hybrids like the Maverick and I have no doubt that Lightnings will be sold for six figures, the F-150 is already half way through the 2022 model year and there’s enough dealerships that you can order a 2023 truck exactly how you want it in a few months for way less than MSRP that it’s silly to pay full MSRP now from a dealer that wants to manipulate you.

If this dealership wants to play games with you, play them right back. Tell the salesperson to refund your deposit right away and when he asks why; thank him for his hard work but that he lost the sale because his sales manager is a dildo. Make sure to be extra polite but also firm in that you want the deposit refunded.

You already did good by getting a loan through your bank; taking away the dealer’s leverage over you on that aspect of the sale. Get some other offers on your trade and see if you can get any local or online dealers that will offer over $29K for your trade.

It’s quite possible a different manager from the dealership with the truck you are interested in will call back and try to make the original MSRP plus tint/bedliner and trade-in deal work. If between now and then there’s a better offer for your trade, have them change the original deal to reflect the better trade-in value. Then tell them to knock $1,200 off the MSRP because you are going to have the tint and bedliner done yourself. If they balk at you changing the deal, remind them that you had already agreed to a price, were ready to head over to pick up the truck and that they were the ones that didn’t honor that deal. You must be hammer or anvil; don’t let the dealer be the one hammering you. Just be sure that you are professional and unemotional even if the dealership employees lose their shit when you turn the tables on them.

Full MSRP isn’t a good deal, Ford makes nearly a million or more trucks a year. The supply was disrupted and they still made nearly a quarter of a million F-150 trucks in 2021. However the reduction in supply of a hundred thousand or more trucks has caused a frenzy to buy new vehicles as though it were Cuba in 1959. Don’t worry though; Ford is still making trucks in 2022 and there will probably be plenty of 2023s to go around too. Full MSRP only seems like a good deal now because only a short time ago, people were paying over MSRP and happily.

If they refunded your money and still have the truck this coming Thursday; the last day of the month and you haven’t seen any trucks you like more in between. If they are reasonably close, drive over a couple hours before closing and tell them that you want to buy a truck. Let the salesperson suggest to you to buy the one that you are interested in and see what deal they are willing to make with you there in person. You are already in their computer, so don’t let them know your full name until you go through the Kabuki theater of getting prices. If they still can’t manage to sell you a truck then, it means that they are more interested in screwing over customers than selling trucks. Walk away and find a dealership that actually is in the business of selling vehicles.

Good luck!

What would you guys do?
On Monday: I found a truck on Ford Inventory that was in transit and got ahold of the dealer and started putting a deal together. The sales guy was slow as hell but between then and now we agreed to MSRP, they will do a window tint and bed liner, and give me $29K for my trade. The sales guy sent me a KBB Instant Cash Offer for the trade amount to my email and I said sweet write up the deal and send it to me and I'll get my bank loan check and be on my way. I put a $500 deposit down.

6PM last night the sales manager calls me and basically tells me to f* off. Says they'll only do $28K for the trade, no bedliner, no tint. Does not seem to care about what the sales guy agreed to? Everything is in writing in email/text message. He's literally just telling me no. So I agreed to it for now to get him off the phone and get the deal in writing but what would you guys do?

I like the truck that is incoming, its a Carbonized Gray 502A Lariat Sport with the BAP. It's probably a pretty rare build from what I've seen given the inventory. But I'm also a principals man and this guy really irritated me. So just curious you alls thoughts. I can always take the deal and then rake them over the coals on the survey and in reviews but I don't know if that practically has any effect.

I think because you agreed to the new terms that those are now the terms the deal is bound to and you have no recourse other than to bail on this deal. In the current market many dealers are shady. I would have fought for the terms of the original deal, and opened a dispute with the State’s Attorney General and BBB.. however, I think this is a moot point.

My reference of "rare build" was the BAP with the factory dual exhaust. Try and find one in stock. If he is willing to be flexible, totally agree.

You have no power really. If you want a Lariat BAP off a lot, you are going to have to pay the extra $$$ is what it comes down to.

I would bet you could make the 29k trade value stick if you went in person and just left out the bedliner and tint. Just get the truck.

The next guy that walks in and pay MSRP or more and be offered less for his trade. He will also leave happy as a clam with a new truck

Most of the time, I'd tell them to go fly a kite, but these are different times. That said, two can play the shenanigan's game. I might be tempted to walk in there, have them go all the way through with most of the paperwork and then when right down to the end, say "oh, I thought we were still talking the original deal" and then walk if they won't honor it.

Sometimes, and probably not now because of lack of vehicles, salesmen and dealers don't want to invest a lot of time in a deal to see it walk. Lately that doesn't matter as much, because there are buyers lining up.

Though there are all kinds of other shenanigans you could pull. Go in there, and find something wrong they need to check out or correct before you will do the deal. Come back the next day and tell them loan officer was sick. Get covid and can't see them for 2 weeks.

Point is that once they invest a lot of time into consummating a deal with you, they are less likely to walk away themselves. Thats why they dropped the liner/tint/1000k, they expected you to walk, so they could invest more time in someone that would probably pay a higher price.

(emphasis added by me)

I mean, just point to the Rust under the truck. I 100% guarantee you it's there. That's one thing "wrong" with truck you can use for leverage.

Look for crappy paint. This is also common on the 14th gen.

Surveys and reviews. What a bunch of pansy ass people. Go handle your business. Nobody wants to hear your whining online. Man up and go handle your business. I'm tired of reviews. Buy the truck or don't.

Maybe you should get off the forums buddy, that's what they are here for. Not trying to cause a problem but nobody is forcing you to scroll through this or any of the other posts that have complaints or negative experiences.

I would go in with coly of email and tell the manager you have a deal. If they do not honor their deal, you will be contacting the BBB, posting on all social media, and contacting a lawyer for breach of contract. You put $$ down on a contract. They cannot modify after, unless you agree and sign.

That shady as f.

I would NOT have them do bedliner or tint. No way. No how
I agree ! If you have the deal via text or email ,legally they are bound to stick with said contract. I also agree with"Mtnman1" I'd go elsewhere for the tint and bedliner or you'll end up with a crappy cute rate on both. Hold their feet in the fire!

Get the deal in writing. Sell the current truck online. You’ll get more. Then get the truck. They are pretty savvy at getting people from all angles.

The fact that people like that try to pull a fast one on you doesnt piss me of nearly as bad as the fact that they think I'm so stupid that I dont know whats going on!!!!!!!!

But people read reviews and surveys presented by the right party can have a big impact (i.e. ford sees lots of complaints from one dealer and cuts their allocation).

Yes, take care of your business, but for me that "business" is researching new companies I'm dealing with and seeing how they treat other customers. Daughter just bought a car. She got ripped off (didn't tell me she was buying it before she did).

Within 5 minutes just researching dealers that don't markup over MSRP, I saw multiple complaints about the dealer she bought from for various reason. Note I didn't specifically search for this dealer. A few minutes of "handling her business" by researching would have saved her. There are people like me that look at those "pansy ass people" when they bitch online and take note of it.

It Provides value.

Also as someone mentioned above, you're on a forum, one place where people "whine" about issues all the time. You don't like it, ignore those posts.

As others have mentioned unless you have a signed contract you have nada. I’m also a man of principal, I stick to them. If this is telling you dump the deal then do it. I bought my truck and had my signed contract stating my 0% interest. 2 days later they tried telling me it was going to be 1.9%. So I called Ford and they informed me they do not get between dealerships and customer disputes, I told them that I felt like I was scammed and that I had my signed contract and all they said was “I’m sorry, review your contract and talk to the dealer. So I made sure to take a bar exam on my contract (exaggerated). There was no clause, everything said it was final. So I replied to my salesman that from then on I would need every communication in official writing through the mail so that my attorney can review it. Then they tried telling me that suddenly they could do the 1% but that I would need to give them another $2K, I then told them they can get the $2K out of the Fusion I traded in. I then dropped that 1 star on the dealership website through Ford and low and behold 2 days later my contract was fine, they ponied up the $2K and I got my 0%
