Am I playing with fire if I don’t get an extended warranty with a 2023 Powerboost?

I have never gotten an extended warranty on any vehicles I bought but I’m reconsidering it based on how complex the F150 is especially the Powerboost.

It would be nice to buy a discounted real Ford extended warranty. However I live in California so I can’t buy a cheap warranty out of state from Granger, Ziegler, or Flood Ford.

Should I buy an over priced warranty from a California Ford dealer or take my chances without?

There may be a work around for a Granger warranty in California. Troll the site.

@Eighthtry
I just read something about this and a "wet signature".

They may have to ship you the paperwork and have you actually sign?
I'm guessing, I didn't read all the details...

I would call and talk to Granger and Flood before you make any decisions about who to buy from.

Either way.......I'd definitely suggest an extended warranty if you plan to keep you PB for a while.

All I can say is, I wouldn’t own one beyond the factory warranty. A transmission could be almost $8000.

It’s your call……

I am like you and have never purchased an extended warranty as I believed that any warranty issues would pop up within the factory warranties and was never burned by this belief. Having said that, I'll be purchasing one for my 2025 PB once I take delivery of it no question about it and I hope it ends up being a waste of money... But I just want the peace of mind. Take that for what its worth.

Also, I am pretty sure I've seen some posts on here about ways to buy a granger warranty from CA. I'd scour the threads in here, get the attention of some of the subject matter experts, and maybe even make some phone calls.

I fix most anything around here myself. Appliances, cars, computers, plumbing ?, landscaping…and I’ll get a warranty on this truck. The transmission alone is reason enough.

10 years ago, I would have said you were foolish if you purchased an extended warranty. Now, with the cost to replace even failed minor parts like headlights and taillights, I would say you are foolish if you do not get one. I opted for the Premiumcare with the added lighting coverage for 8 years /100,000 miles as that is usually when I begin looking for a new vehicle.

Based on my understanding of how this all works, I think it is possible that you might be intertwining two different warranty sources, when there is a pretty important difference. Ford Motor Company offers FORD's Extended Service Protection Plan - this is an extended warranty available directly from Ford (through their dealerships), and it doesn't matter where you live. All Ford dealers have this ESP available to purchase (there a number of different plans to choose from), and all Ford dealerships recognize the warranty for service. Most dealerships sell the ESP at "MSRP", but some dealerships (like Granger) discount it. However, extended warranties are also available through third party entities. The third party extended warranties are a bit of a different animal (and they are NOT "Ford" extended warranties). With some of these companies, you have to take your truck to a service facility that is in the insurance company's network. Others work by reimbursing you after the repair is made, and still others will pay the shop directly. Confusing the issue more, is that some Ford dealerships offer both the Ford factory ESP and a policy from a third party (typically the policy from the third party is cheaper - and may also represent higher dealer profit). Also you can apply your Ford points towards the purchase of a Ford ESP.

It should be noted that I am ignorant as to if California has some special law that would prevent you from buying an insurance product through Granger - or any other out-of-state dealership, but I'm not sure how that could be - you would be buying a Ford product (ESP) through a Ford dealer.

Both California and Florida consider extended warranties to be insurance and do not allow you to purchase them from an out of state dealer. I'm sure there are work arounds though, as mentioned above.

Well, there you go.... Like I said, I didn't know about specific state laws. That kind of sucks....
