Catch-can. Well that wasn't difficult

I finally added the oil separator catch-can that I bought a few months back to my '24 Powerboost. Took 10-15 minutes. The hose I replaced didn't have much gunk in it at all, so hopefully the catch-can won't be needing to get much. Glad to have it though.

Just a hose replacement and making sure to run the new hoses correctly.

What it collects will, I believe, depend on temperatures. Mine collects almost nothing from mid-spring to mid-fall. Then as temperatures drop, it collects more and more. I check it every 4-500 miles. In the coldest of times it'll nearly fill up. This is even when the mileage is entirely on an interstate for the entire 4-500 miles (ie the engine was hot for the whole time). The junk it collects is better off not running thru the engine.

Yeah, with it getting colder, I figure the condensation would kick up and fill it more. I'll check it in about 500 miles and make judgements from there.

I bought a more expensive one. A J&L, but I can tell the quality of the hoses and fasteners are good and nothing had to be forced. I'm glad I'm doing this.

If I remember correctly, you are in Washington State. The wife is from a small town south of you. Anyrate, I think you will see accumulation within a few hundred miles. A 500 mile check is a good plan

If you guys are filling up the can that quickly, if you have the j&l, I suggest the can extension.

I chose not to get the extension since it would reach down far enough to make a few things difficult to get at.

I'm baffled why I need a catch can. I have put 200,000 miles plus on three vehicles, one of which was supercharged, and one 300,000 (my SHO) miles, all with no oil consumption between changes.

Normally I read about supercharging, or someone putting a high flow air filter that adds 50 hp, or headers that add another 50, along with mufflers that add 30, and other cosmetic myths.

But I still don't know how or why a catch can works.

I installed mine last year. From the 3 or 4 times I have emptied it from being about half full, I am guessing 97% water, 2% oil and 1% fuel. I am glad I am not sending that through the combustion chamber any more. Its easy enough to do

Take a look at Improved Racing as well. It’s a little more pricing than J&L, but the oil separator itself is quite a bit more advanced

One thing I was happy about was the J&L had good connectors on it. I saw one company's picture of a catch-can that just had a hose clamp on the end. Mind push and clicked right in.

We’re creating two additional failure points and hopefully preventing some oily sludge from entering the intake manifold. Correct?
