I'm debating between ordering a new '23 and finding a good used '22 at the right price. Harder then you'd think, some of these guys think silly stuff about used. Anyway, I spotted this on a '22 Max Tow PB LB w/tow mirrors:

Ford F-150 How To Ruin A Truck 1695324081928

Worked pretty hard to get a great towing rig only to fumble at the finish line. Brutal.

FWIW, I've looked at a few now and this is a new low for available payload. Wowza! Guess we know why it's called a half-ton truck!

I personally wouldn't want to tow an enclosed trailer weighing 9-10k with a 1/2 ton for anything other than local/around town/off highways.

I think a 1/2 ton can tow a 9-10k trailer such as a flat bed trailer with a car on it as long as you get the rig on a scale and use WDH. Flat bed trailers with a car on it don't have the same surface area that an enclosed trailer does for sway and you can usually adjust the tongue weight by adjusting the position of the car.

My guess is that this is similar to how an OEM gets their "max" tow ratings... with a trailer that has very little side profile to minimize the effect of wind and an easy way to adjust the balance of the load.

In my mind...

up to 6000 lbs enclosed - 1/2 ton
up to 8000 lbs flat bed trailer - 1/2 ton
up to 12,000 lbs enclosed - 1 ton SRW
up to 20,000 lbs enclosed - 1 ton DRW

Some of this is over reaction.

I tow an 24" V-nose enclosed snowmobile trailer often enough with an '18 F-150. 28" to the nose. No problems at all, and I've towed it in some pretty solid rain/wind storms. Long-bed Screw probably helps, and I load tongue weight heavy, but it's certainly stable enough. Heck, that's without antisway or a WD hitch.

Course the trailers aluminum and sleds are pretty light, but I've also towed it with 3,800lbs of SxS inside. I suppose maybe 7.5k all up. Not a big deal, but at that point I wanted a WD hitch and didn't have one handy.

Is it as easy as using an F-350 which also gets used to tow said trailer? Of course not. But things like "Beyond Dangerous" aren't reflective of reality. If I wanted to tow that trailer regularly w/an F-150 I'd stick anti-sway bars on a WD hitch and move on.

Of course I'd just park it if the wind was silly bad, but that's not often. And I'd likely do that with any TV if the weather was that bad. Nor would I happily take an F-150 down any mountain with 9k lbs of trailer. In fact, nope.

Otherwise I get more uncomfortable towing larger single angle trailers. One blowout can make things hit the fan pretty quick.

What's horrifying is that's without massaging seats, BEFORE the DIO safe, and I've seen the truck - It had a spray in bed liner added!

Put a hitch in the receiver and that truck could be in the 900's for payload.

Hence the title "how to ruin a truck"

TTs over 30' OAL should have spread torsion axles on them. Most of their axle configurations leave too much room for improvement with their janky linked leaf springs.

Funny, I had a work trip in Columbus Ohio. On the way back to buffalo today I pulled off at a rest stop to fuel up and talked to a guy with a crew cab F-150 with the 3.5 EcoBoost and a MASSIVE camper behind it. I asked how she towed. He said he all ready ordered a 7.3 Godzilla F-250 and had “no further comment” :ROFLMAO:, that poor half ton looked so out of its league. Anything more than 8k pounds with that aero is just trouble for a half ton.

Twin panel moonroof. Skid plates. The list goes on lol.

My little 302A is pretty spry with a 1624lb. payload...hence the title of this thread...walked into that one.
