2021 supercab 2.7 10speed, 33k miles. Still under factory powertrain warranty.
Symptoms
-pulsation/vibration felt under acceleration. Mainly noticeable between 45-60mph under neutral to moderate throttle conditions, but is also felt during heavy acceleration from a stop to around 35mph and heavy acceleration from 60mph+. There is zero vibration in any speed range while OFF the throttle (coasting). This is felt in the steering wheel, gas pedal, and seat. The vibration frequency seems to be related to road speed only and is not affected by locking gears out to change the RPM. I am not sure of the specific frequency in relation to the wheel speed.
At 60+ the vibration under moderate acceleration it is not very noticeable, but there is a slight cyclical “hum” throughout the cab, like “wommm wommm wommm”. Sounds like cupped tire noise but has done it on 3 different sets of tires. All symptoms are still present and do not change with tires/wheels (factory tires, NEW falken wild peaks, and a buddy’s set of OEM tires/wheels). Nothing changes the vibration.
More symptoms:
-consistent clunk/bang when coming to a stop. Sounds like exaggerated driveshaft unloading/loading noise.
-occasionally while traveling at 70+ and giving heavy throttle I will feel a vibration similar to the one explained above but much worse. Seems like u joints binding. It does not happen every time unlike the first issue of the 45-60mph vibration which DOES happen every time.
-POP/clunk from under feet/floorboard occasionally while moving slow and turning on uneven terrain (in 2wd). Sounds like gears binding and popping like I am in 4wd on pavement.
Timeline:
Been to the dealer 3x regarding this issue.
Tech says he verified my concern of the vibration. Put a call into ford engineering, engineering says it is normal characteristic. It absolutely is not. Was told they cannot do any investigation without any fault code/engine code because they don’t know what it is. They refuse to do any diagnostic work.
Noticed front left CV axle seal had weeping oil around it. Dealer replaced seal. (Could be related, or could not be.)
Was told TSB# 22-2224 does not apply, truck is on latest PCM version I am told but do not see any history in OASIS saying that TSB was performed.
All diagnostic transmission and engine PIDS were fine when dealer checked.
no substantial misfire counts were found.
I personally looked at OASIS and found the front differential had been replaced prior to my ownership due to the housing splitting. I am questioning how good the repair was done or if when the differential split, it caused damage to planetary gears in the transfer case.
My thoughts -
-Drivetrain issue for sure. Likely after transmission output since RPM does not effect it, road speed does.
-rear differential/pinion
-front differential/pinion (I am unsure if 2021 f150’s have IWE’s or if the transfer case is engaged all the time - it changed around this year I believe).
-Driveshaft U-joints
-Driveline angles
-Driveshaft U join phasing
-driveshaft
-Wheel bearings (they can sometimes have weird symptoms)
-suspension/bushings?
-CV axle’s (I notice passenger front has slight up/down play).
-Transmission Tail shaft bushing
-Driveshaft slip joint needing to be re-greased
-Trans mounts
-Engine mounts
-injectors
-Spark plugs
-coils
any tips on how to get ford to actually try to diagnose this? Since there was a TSB related to tip-in throttle vibration, and i'm on the latest PCM version, they seem to just write it off and say its "normal" and refuse to do ANY diagnostic work.
