So I bought my truck used back in May with 24,000 miles on it and since day 1 its had an odd clunk from the rear when slowing down or taking off(mostly on the 6-5 downshift). I took it back to the dealer where I bought it about 2 weeks afterward, and they did a main control accelerated break in procedure(reset adaptive tables essentially) and told me they had fixed it. Well when I picked it up, it was no better, but I was pressed for time so I just took it back home. Brought it back a few weeks later, and the truck just sat for 2 weeks without being looked at, so out of frustration and necessity for transportation I picked it back up. Took it back again about 2 weeks later, and this time they said it was the driveshaft, so they replaced it and wouldn't you know, it's still just as bad as it was before! Now I've heard these 10r80s aren't super smooth to begin with, but the way thing thing bangs and clunks, you would think it had 200,000 miles on it and had been abused most of its life. I've even tried talking to other dealer service departments, and the general consensus is that is just the way its gonna be. Ford customer service is no help either, so I'm really starting to think I made a mistake in buying this truck. Sad thing is, I really like it other than that issue with the trans....anybody else have similar issues? If so, did they get resolved? I just want to enjoy my truck.

That really sucks. My first impression is that the dealer is simply guessing at the issue and throwing parts at it. Do you know if the trans fluid has been changed and proper level verified? My 21 has the occasional ”non-smooth” shift, mostly from 3 to 4 and only after I have been towing a trailer.

Hey there, can you send over a message with your VIN and the name/location of the Ford dealer you have been working with? I would like to look into your repair concerns on my end.

My thoughts exactly. I did check the level a few weeks back(burned my hand on the catalytic converter while I was at it lol) and it was a quart low at operating temp. That did seem to help for a bit, but now it's back to its antics again. Haven't had a chance to tow with it yet, but I'm curious to see if that affects anything...

Also having clunks while shifting. I have a 2023 with just over 3k miles on it and this truck is honestly embarrassing the way it generates deep clunks. Check out this video from gear 4 to 5. You’ll hear a loud thump early in the video. Had it looked at by dealer and they don’t seem to have a solve. Lovely.

I get a very consistent hard shift if it's cold out and the truck hasn't been run in a while AND I'm deliberately trying to go slowly. Keeping it under 15-20 in my neighborhood, it'll skip 1 to 3 for the first shift of the day. If I give it some gas and go faster than I want to, that shift from 1st to 3 is noticably better orchestrated, but still iffy. I just hope I'm not doing any damage. It's been a seriously smooth and impressive transmission otherwise.

Have you been able to get a solution to this? I have been dealing with this on my 21 since it was new. has 16k miles now. Took it back, they said it was fine. No codes. Said they reset the adaptive tables. I reset them myself with no improvement. Its awful. sometimes it feels like i got rear ended its such a loud and violent clunk. Mostly downshifting from 4th to 3rd. I hate it, it literally makes my stomach knot up it makes me so mad to have paid my hard money for something that acts like this. Meanwhile I can drive my 94 Chevy with 170k miles and it shifts so smooth you can't even feel it.

As of now, no resolution. But I have an appt on the 19th to have it looked at by another dealer closer to me. I'll be sure to post once they get it in and (fingers crossed) figure it out. I feel your pain on this one!

I have a 2021 XLT FX4 that has harsh shifts and clunking. Took it in twice. Was told it's normal. When is a metallic clunking noise ever normal???

I was told the same thing by my selling dealer! I've had a few vehicles over the years, and none of them made noise like that when things were normal lol. The truck is actually at another dealer now, and they might be on to something with what they're thinking it might be. I will post an update with the results(fingers crossed)hopefully later today.

Well I just got my truck back yesterday, and I'm glad to say they finally got it fixed! It turns out the driveshaft flange on the transmission was worn out(no clue why) but the clunking is completely gone! Something worth looking into for anybody else having this issue...
