I wish it was optional...
I'm probably gonna get flamed by the Blue Oval nut swingers on here - and that's fine. I'm writing this for 2 reasons.
1) I'm considering this therapy over the most significant buyers remorse I have ever had (over the nearly 3 years of ownership so far)
2) I'm hoping someone who comes to the forum considering this truck reads this post and I save someone else from this tragedy of a vehicle.

You can search my profile and see I was so excited to be buying a new "to my specifications" truck when there were no trucks on lots. The Great Plague had depleted dealer inventory and I felt beyond lucky to get an allocation, get built without work stoppages and get the truck without it sitting in a parking-lot waiting for a chip to arrive.

Then the truck arrived. 2022 Lariat with 6.5 bed and the bad suicide door cabin (that was my fault and forgot how much I hate those doors)... I should have gotten the standard cab as another foot would not matter that much in length.

So here's what I still like about the truck almost 3 years later:
  • The camera 360 package (when it works) is great. The truck is very easy to get into parking spots or maneuver around the barn or anywhere with that feature
  • Heated seats and steering wheel get HOT - and pretty fast too. That's awesome.
  • Ride comfort is really good for a pickup. Thought that day 1 and still think that today. Very happy with how the truck feels on long trips.
  • Really like the tie down system (forget the name) Ford has in the bed. And the camera (when it works) that shows the bed when underway. Both make having big loads safer and easier.
What do I dislike
  • The electrical system / software is beyond horrible. And I group them together because the giant screen that looks so pretty crashes ALL THE TIME and when it does - you have no stereo, you have no cameras, you have no climate control... and it takes 5 minutes for it to complete the reboot.
    • The backup camera will often appear on the screen when you shift into reverse and then the system freezes - so while you are moving the image is not - that's freaking dangerous!
    • The collision avoidance system has locked up my brakes due to a shadow on the road or sun-glare no fewer than 6 times - and nearly cause an accident. Certainly has scared the crap out of me. Sure - you can turn it off... but SOME software updates will then turn it back on without a warning. Cool.
    • Auto wipers are the worst I have ever seen on a car
    • There's about half a dozen other quirks and annoyances related to the computers on board that get better or worse depending on whatever update Ford pushes
  • The transmission - when it's cold out seems clunky AF. The truck will sometimes be fine and sometimes lurch.
  • The seats have become "less comfortable" with only 20K miles on the truck. Both my wife and I have noticed this. For reference I'm 5'11" and 170#, shes 5'8" and 135#... so it's not like we are crushing the foam or something.
  • Constant battery issues - truck going into deep sleep mode and nothing remote will then work... and yes I have reset the stupid battery thing several times - battery tests fine - dealership says it's normal.
I guess if I had to summarize it - the trick rides nice, the engine is nice and powerful... but so many of the interaction points with the vehicle suck so bad - I wish I had not gotten it. And, because it's a Ford - it's now lost 50% of it's value from the purchase price in 3 years... and since I keep my vehicles for a good long time... I have years to regret this purchase and also years of trips to the dealership to tell me everything is normal... or that all my issue are because I installed a radar detector.

This is my experience and I'm sharing it to hopefully have someone else be saved. If you bleed Blue, that's nice, I'm sure I'm "doing it wrong" and all these issues are my fault for pushing the start button incorrectly...

My truck is always broken and is constantly returned to the dealership for continued repairs. They have had my truck a total of 280+ days since I bought it in June 2021. Extremely disappointed in my purchase as well and very likely to never buy a Ford product again after this truck.

If you’ve hated it that long, I really don’t understand why you haven’t sold it. It sucks that you’re having so many issues, so many people have little to no issues.

I’ve sold a Toyota before because it was a piece of shit. I’ve sold a Chevrolet before because it was a piece of shit.

They all have their problem children

Blue Oval nut-swinger here. I guess? ? ???

(Not really sure what that means though, to be honest. But I've been called way worse)

I kept reading to look for the serious issue that would push almost anyone over the edge.

The only one that stuck out is an APIM that definitely should have been addressed under warranty.

However, it's a well documented fact around here that these trucks are a constant jekyll/Hyde with low voltage issues. I personally would have addressed that first just to eliminate the multitude of irritations that can come along with it.

Maybe a Toyota with a self destructing engine is more up your alley?

All joking aside I’m sorry to hear you’ve been having problems with your ride. My 22 has been flawless over the 125k miles of ownership. My transmission is smooth as butter still and I haven’t had any electrical problems. Then again my truck gets used hard everyday for 12 hours a day and it doesn’t sit around for battery issues to crop up.

You can also adjust the sensitivity so your truck doesn’t slam on the auto-brakes for a shadow like you said.

Try leaving your truck on a charger when it’s not being used. Sounds like this truck sits a lot judging by its lack of mileage, which is terrible for the battery. If you have one of the Covid-junk batteries that every truck left the factory with, don’t be cheap and just replace the darn thing. So many people had electrical problems just from a bad battery and letting their trucks sit around.

Or just sell the truck and move on. I’m like you and I keep my trucks for a while, but I wouldn’t keep a truck I didn’t like, no matter how much money I lost

It's been 3+ years. Sell it and buy a Toyota or a RAM or whatever tingles your nut swinger and move on with life. Problem solved.

Almost 4 years and 70K+ miles on my 2021 F150 5.0L Platinum and I'm as pleased as Polichinello with it.

The apim update and bcm update
My dealer did on battery 3
Fixed all my truck caused electricity gremlins
I still get user caused issues..
A reputable dealer ? woukd have seen the bcm apim mandatory update to address battery issues and charging issues
Rugedraw and a few others provided that sneaky update info..to us nuts here.

But if your unhappy....
I feel your pain.. get rid of it.

My truck was in the dealership a combined 9 months this year with electrical issues. Instead of being disappointed, I pushed hard on ford and my dealership to fix every little thing until they were resolved. I also pushed for close to equivalent complimentary loaners for the duration that I put 40k combined miles on(40k additional miles that would have been on my truck otherwise). Now I have my truck back with zero issues and a complimentary ESP that will take me to around 80k miles and I couldn’t be happier.

Im by no means a troubleshooting expert. But I have spent more time on this forum than i'd like to admit. I currently have a PB on order and am fully expecting to take delivery of a brand new truck and immediately replace the BRAND NEW battery with a different one. Thats what I have learned over the last 6 months or so of diving in and out of topics within this forum. Is that fair and right?? Of course not. Its actually bullshit that a person spends that type of money and needs to then go spend more to replace the shitty ass battery.. That being said, its pretty well documented that this simple step fixes a VERY wide array of electrical issues...

If you haven't done this already, it seems to me its a small price to pay to mitigate your frustrations. Which are completely warranted btw...

Hope this simple solution fixes the problems you are experiencing. (and if it doesn't.. then take the others advice and dump the POS so you can regain your sanity)

I've had my share of vehicles with issues, so I feel your pain. It took 2 years to lemon law a Challenger that Dodge finally told me to stop bringing back to the dealer since they would not work on it anymore, lol. I traded a 22 Frontier in on my F150. I hated the crappy shifting 9 sp trans they use and it was a genuinely uncomfortable truck to drive- harsh riding, bouncy, very heavy steering, the electronics were just badly implemented, etc. It was competent as a truck, but not enjoyable so I took the loss and moved on. Anything you bought in 21-22 will have a huge depreciation loss since the market went from under-supplied to over-supplied. People were paying over sticker and now there are at least 10k rebates on most all trucks. That's not just Ford, it's all of them. So, you will get some of that money back just because a new truck will be discounted heavily. Get a value on your current truck from Carmax and Carvana so you know what the real market value is if you decide to trade. Used trucks still do pretty well. Life's too short to torture yourself.

Steer clear of ram, at least until they get the misfire issues with the hurricane motor fixed. I have a 2025 ram 1500 laramie that I'm currently lemon lawing. Ram of course is taking as long as possible to respond to anything. It had 849 miles on it when I took it back to the dealer for the 4th time for the same misfire issues countless others have experienced. Ram does not have a true fix for it yet. Two or three hundred of those 849 miles were put on by the dealer service department (with my blessing) for trying to troubleshoot the truck. So, I have gotten about 600 miles on my new truck in roughly 4 months. The 4th payment comes out of my account TODAY, in fact.

Replacing a brand new battery based NOT on performance but on other peoples' anecdotal evidence is, IMHO, ridiculous.

But, hey, your call.
I feel it didn't need to be stated that OBVIOUSLY a person wouldn't replace a battery that is performing well... My comment was based on how often these trucks struggle with some electrical stuff and it almost always seems to be tied to the crappy ford battery.. Obviously, if the truck I receive never experiences any issues then im not going to arbitrarily replace a functioning part... Im just preparing for that likely scenario and accepting it for what it is in advance.

The comment was merely trying to provide some possible support for the frustrated OP. I guess next time i'll have to be very extra clear on every little detail of a post/suggestion.

Disagree. I got my 2021 F150 Platinum 5.0L 6.5' in March of 2021. Paid AZ Plan. Was recently offered a very significant number on it for trade in, but decided to keep it mostly because interest rates are silly and I only owe a small amount @ 1.89% right now. So not all 21-22 have a "huge depreciation loss".

I responded to what you literally said, which was:

Immediately means immediately.

As in, you expect to take delivery of a new truck and will immediately replace the battery.

I'm not sure how else that should have been interpreted.
