Tacoma to F150

Anyone make the switch? Currently have a 2021 doublecab with a long bed. Runs good, paid off, just a little cramped but honestly I deal with it. Got about $7k off MSRP on a 2024 Lariat which I ordered back in June. Now I'm hesitating and my wife is telling me to keep the Taco. I gotta be honest it's been hard to give up the Taco. In the 3 years that I've had it, it's been great. No issues and I keep reading about people passing 300k with no issues and regular maintenance. I always wanted an F150 but is it a dumb move to make and risk getting a problematic Ford and constant dealer visit?

The 940 lb payload capacity in my Tacoma is what's really pissing me off. I don't haul often, but when I do I bottom it out even with 5 people and a few shopping carts full from Costco. My Mazda Cx5 has an 850 lbs payload capacity. I find that absolutely wild that this "truck" can only hold 90 more pounds than my dinky mini SUV.

Also, dealer is giving me $31k for the Tacoma, I bought it for $37.5. Not bad for 3 years of use.

I’m in a 2022 Tacoma DCSB trd off-road 4x4 currently and I’m placing my order next month for a 2025 Lariat 501A FX4 super crew short bed with the 3.5 eco boost and 3.55 rear end. My wife and I have a 3 year old and a 3 month old and I’m 6’1” so it’s pretty cramped for me while driving. I’m not hesitant at all seeing as how the new tundras are overpriced garbage and the engines are horrible too. I do plan on getting an extended warranty but that’s just for even more peace of mind.

Lots of taco converts here. While I've owned a taco double cab previously, it's been many years between the two. There's really no way to compare the two --- completely different platforms. Tacos have, until quite recently, a car-like sitting position that's not very comfortable. That difference becomes much more noticeable with age.

Ah man dumping the taco after 3 years as well. Is the F150 going to be your main ride? My wife wants a big family hauler like a Tahoe or Armada, so having 2 big cars for us seems like overkill.

The years spread on your situation is different but it was a night and day difference in terms of overall pleasure for me. My 2022 SCREW Lariat PB 502a is a total pleasure to drive and even my wife loves its ride.

Any issues with the truck that you had to go back to the dealer for in the time that you owned it? I have one toddler and a baby on the way, don't have much time or patience for dealership warranty visits right now.

Yeah it’ll be my main ride! We just got my wife a brand new Kia Telluride SX Prestige X Pro which is really nice for the price which has a 3rd row too if we need it. When we don’t need the 3rd row, we just fold it down and have a ton of space. We were going to get the grand Highlander hybrid but they’ve been on a stop sale recall for quite a while now (again, Toyota’s quality has really gone downhill). We’re leasing the Telluride right now but if and when we have a 3rd kid in the future, we might need to get an expedition max or a suburban (we both refuse to drive a minivan haha).

The Telluride is great. We test drove one earlier this year, almost pulled the trigger on it. I wish the US had better minivan options. The Kia carnival looks awesome, but no AWD kills it for me. They should just start making SUV's with sliding doors.

My Tacoma was actually rather problematic. It had a random deal where it would absolutely not accelerate. It wasn’t the typical Toyota 3.5 momentary throughout a response bog. It was an absolute and complete disconnect of the accelerator pedal. Sometimes I could stick it up in neutral and get it to pop out of it bog other times I had to turn it off. It never would show a code, Toyota couldn’t fix it cause they couldn’t see the problem.I needed to trade it before it got us killed.
my power boost has a basically 1600 pound capacity as listed by Ford. I’m sure that could be cheated up a little bit more.

We also we having the grandkids on weekends more often. A Tacoma is an ok, truck, but a 10 & 6 year old is a bit snug with them and their stuff.

I paid just over 41k for the Tacoma, got 37.5k on trade.

I know it's not always possible, but there's no law that says you can't have a Taco and an F150.

After the dust settles from the conflict the strategy might trigger? Everyone will see the amazing benefits to owning both. Like you said, it's paid for. Which is awesome and the key to the legitimacy.

(My oldest daughter outright objects to everything I just stated. But she's just biased by the fact that she can influence [manipulate] most people, but NOT her dad. ???)

I made the switch. There are pros and cons. Pros are more room, better capability, much faster and easier switching into 4hi and 4lo, lots of drive modes, way better infotainment, more comfort, and more power without losing any mpg. Cons are harder to park and maneuver, handles like a yacht, slightly less active modding community, no manual transmission available.

My Tacoma had a leaky timing cover that required a recall and engine out repair, body mount squeak, windshield wipers never wiped smoothly, and really stupid gear ratios in the transmission. I narrowly avoided the rear axle recall where the rear wheels would fall off.

I only have 1400 mi on my F-150 so far, but nothing has cropped up except the PCV valve making duck noises, but I think that is normal. First oil change was normal apart from some excess copper, so we'll see ...

I prefer the F-150 community a bit more. Y'all are more mature, more helpful, and less insecure about your choices.

Perfect truck for me would be a Ranger-sized F-150. Same design, just shrink the dimensions 10%. I don't like the current Ranger design at all. Way too many superfluous curves. I'm not a big dude, so I don't need a mile of elbow room. I'd rather park it easier. But being able to see over Tacomas and 4Runners is nice though.

oh, that rear axle Tacoma recall was bullshit. Wheels didn’t fall off axles didn’t back out at the worst, some trucks had axle leaks
