We know all about rear axle hyperbole. ?

It is what it is, and for those that had to deal with parts availability issues, it was frustrating. But both that issue, as well as the frequency of failed axle bolts, seems to have become but a trickle.

Man if you have a reliable paid off Taco I’d not part with it for any new truck.

I’m a die hard Taco owner converted. Had 5 of them, all gens but 4th. Just like you, the one I traded for the F150 was a paid off 3rd Gen, 6 speed manual, very tricked out. 85k problem free miles, got 3k less than I paid new on trade.

There is no comparison on how much more truck the F150 is. Way different ball parks. That’s how it should be, since it’s double the price. And it’s lost half its value already to everyone but me. The creature comforts, being able to tweak stuff yourself w/ Forscan, the balls, the cabin, towing, it’s very very very much better than a Toyota midsize.

I’d buy a 1st or 2nd Gen again for the nostalgia, simplicity, and reliability but I could never go back to daily driving a new one.

Edit: not really double the price anymore. The MSRP on a loaded Tacoma is absolutely bonkers and unjustified.

I’m the type that wants an enjoyable truck to drive and I’m fine paying the price to do that. It’s hard to justify trading up for a new F150 with a paid off Tacoma from a reliability and financial standpoint. But if you get a problem free F150, even an XLT much less a higher trim package, the driving experience is pretty exceptional. I’m at 45k on mine and I absolutely love driving it. It has been in sport mode all weekend and it still makes me smile. Worth paying for, that’s for sure!

mine was paid off, but it was a piece of shit. Now our 2008 FJ cruiser is completely different story I won’t sell it for nothing.

I know it's not always possible, but there's no law that says you can't have a Taco and an F150.

Keep it!!!

After the dust settles from the conflict the strategy might trigger? Everyone will see the amazing benefits to owning both. Like you said, it's paid for. Which is awesome and the key to the legitimacy.

(My oldest daughter outright objects to everything I just stated. But she's just biased by the fact that she can influence [manipulate] most people, but NOT her dad. ???)

Yea, my wife would definitely leave me. It's bad enough that I'm driving her crazy and can't decide between the two trucks.

I assume you're in the lucky group that didn't have any issues with your truck? That's my problem is I've been reading the horror stories too much. Not that there aren't people with a ton of issues on them, I just wonder what that actual percentage is of trouble free owners there are in the grand scheme of things.

I've always been an extremely financially responsible person, so to take this risk is going against that core value, but not everything is about money.

You sure she wouldn't just go to the Best Western for a couple of nights until the steam bled off?

I'm just asking. ?

Afterall, she's only complaining about you not making up your mind.

Oh well if that would be the case, that doesn't sound bad at all. That actually sounds like a bonus. ???

Toyota has been very successful at marketing their stuff as reliable, but the reality is the roads are full of old F-150s, not Tacomas. If you look at defect rate the difference is like 1.5 defects per new vehicle for a Toyota vs 2.5 for Ford, but Ford actually puts technology in their stuff and has decent engine power. I think quality is the same but Toyota is just more risk averse.

Yep, I'm in the problem free camp. Never seen the dealer except for an alignment and the ebrake harness recall. 45k and counting.

FJ's are the best 4x4 ever made by Toyota IMO. Owned 2, a 2011 TT and a 2013 Iceberg. I've owned a 2000 Hundy also. You cannot beat an FJ. They are bulletproof.

Here’s my 2011 in the CO mountains above tree line:

Defects are one thing, but longevity is another. 200k miles for a late teens, early 20's F150 sounds like a lot. 300k for the same year Tacoma sounds normal. It's all anecdotal based on forum posts of course. Here's one with 425k miles apparently.

Aside from the Hundy that I bought with 85k and drove to 165k I’ve never really benefited from Toyota longevity. Even then, not really, as you toss a timing belt, tensioner, and water pump in every 100k and drive it 500k. I get sick of stuff too easy to keep that long. Plus, Toyota is boring. Terribly so. It’s all about what you’re willing to shell out for, driving experience wise. Odds are high an F150 won’t give you any shit. And if it doesn’t, it’s a night and day difference in ownership payback versus a Tacoma. Night and day.

If you look at things like copart, it's amazing the number of F150's at 180,000-250,000 that finally met their auction life status.

The 3.5 Ecoboost forum isn't nearly as congested as this forum, but there are plenty of long time members that are running around in their 2011 or 2012 Ecoboost with 200,000 to 300,000 miles. And lots of knowledge of that generation as well.

Fords have their warts, no doubt. But they build an array of good engines that can give you many years of service.

As for the Taco, my daughter in law would have nothing but a Tacoma when her husband was looking for her. He found her a 2017 that was just beyond the 3/36 mark. They might be well engineered but we couldn't get her to drive it until my sons F150 XLT 2.7 needed fuel. She'd drive her Tacoma the next day while he got the F150 filled up.
She never admitted that she found it boring, but that is what he would say when she wasn't listening. ?

The Telluride is great. We test drove one earlier this year, almost pulled the trigger on it. I wish the US had better minivan options. The Kia carnival looks awesome, but no AWD kills it for me. They should just start making SUV's with sliding doors.
My Wife will not give up her odyssey for that very reason. Sliding doors. Bought one new when the kid was in diapers and both of them cried when she traded it in 2018 with over 200k and a lot of heavy use for another new Odyssey. The 2025 just came out but very disappointing as there have been little no updates. Supposed to be coming out with a hybrid Odyssey…we shall see. If Ford put some sliders on an Explorer or Expedition she would probably buy.
