Sell me on why I SHOULD allow updates

Updates have provided a smoother transmission and drive modes with my powerboost. That being said I don’t auto update anymore, I manually request and update in my driveway. 1 too many times my truck has updated on a camping trip or long road trip and I have to reconfigure everything. It is mainly a first world inconvenience unless you have fancy forscan changes that revert.

That also goes for inferior aftermarket crap parts people bolt on their trucks after listening to the "shit bums" on YouTube selling them garbage lowering or lifting kits that f**k up their suspension, or "Chinese Steeda" junk that doesn't work or breaks after 500 miles. Then Mother Ford throws up her hands and says NO WARRANTY THAT CAUSE YOU F*@ked IT UP ...

there’s 1 pending update i’ve had for MONTHS and i stil haven’t allowed it to go through. it has something to do with the 8 speaker B&O system but i’d rather not make it sound worse than it already is!

Because fixing things to prevent potential issues in the future isn’t a bad thing.

As a side note, I hate the way software development works most of the time. Something is released with know problems and they’re fixed later. It seems like EVERY software developer is doing this.

I guess as a counterpoint: At one point in time, updates weren’t even possible (or weren’t something an owner could do), so when a product shipped it either worked as expected or it had problems for the entire time you owned it.

Indeed, known bugs and often on a known bugs OS. I blame the Agile software development process but really the issue is us in the end.

Like just about everything it is rooted in cost. In my observation this runs true for firmware and hardware also, even food and pork bellies. The market (us/we) are the issue driving quality of anything. We the consumers do not want to pay as little as possible for maximum service/software/quality, value is what we claim to seek. With very few exceptions, you get what you pay for rings throughout the various markets. If we aren't willing to pay of quality software that has been thoroughly (regression) tested, then we get to be the testers realizing the bugs.

i.e. The products at the company I work for cost more than similar products you can acquire on the Amazons and Alibaba's of the world, and those sometimes with better reviews :| The reasons ours cost more is that we test more.. Not just production test but testing per applicable use cases and associated specifications. We test our products and tweak their designs accordingly and way beyond what they suppliers on these entail sites do with their similar products. I know because I run the labs that test them and often evaluate the competitions products. I can prove this out to potential customers and clients but often they go on-line and just buy the solution that appears to fit their needs at the lowest price available.

I turned mine off as I have a tune and don't want it to be wiped, then have to install again.

It is annoying they pester you for weeks on end when an update comes out, until they eventually don't.

With all the stories of people getting updates and it screwing up stuff on their truck, why should I allow these? My truck is perfectly fine as it is. What's the point of potentially screwing it up?

Knowing what I know about software and updates, most related to infrastructure and security, I would recommend updating for an often more secure solution and to take the guess work out of what may be at issue. It also as shown in other posts contributes to performance. In my 18 months experience with my beloved PB, I would recon the juice has been worth the squeeze.

If this 2024 F150 is your first experience with this OTA update process, then you can't really relate to what those of us who have had these trucks since day one went through. If we kept auto updates off, some of us would not have Bluecruise, full screen phone capability, poor transmission tuning, cameras unusable at speed, poor functioning lane centering and driver assist features and more. Your 2024 was built with almost all the updates you will see people talking about on this forum already.

A fella with a 2024 can absolutely get away with firewalling his truck off from the cloud, and likely experience no serious consequence.

But we early adopters would be cutting our nose off to spite.........

The newest car I've ever owned prior to this was my wife's 16 4Runner.

Me personally, my newest car was a 11 Crown Vic Police I bought at auction.

And for further thought, I could do without 80% of the stuff my truck does have. I don't get off on gadgets. I honestly wish it crank windows and a stick.

Fair enough. I still find no harm in leaving updates on, but if you're happy with your truck as is and want to turn them off, then by all means: Go ahead and do so.

2021 F-150 Lariat FX4 SuperCrew here. Job 1 truck, built in Dearborn January 2021 and purchased new March 2021.

I have had my OTA turned on since I purchased my truck.

My last OTA update is 4.2.5. From June 2023, if I remember correctly. My truck hasn’t received (or Ford hasn’t sent?) any additional updates since.

My truck runs great!

I had a issue with my '23 PB during hands free calls. Horrible static. It was only through an OTA update that it was resolved.

Some transmission shifting issues were resolved through an OTA update too.

For every story where things went south with an OTA update, there are others where a problem was resolved.

Man! Brothers from different mothers! You shoulda heard the wailing and moaning back in ‘94 when I was forced to accept power windows in my new ‘94 GMC K1500!

I was, however, able to get it with a five speed manual transmission. Sold it in 2922 when the engine gave clear signs of impending mortality and replaced it with a new ‘22 F150 PB XLT 302a.
I love the new Ford, but man, vehicles these days have more bells and whistles than Santa’s sleigh.

Good advice.
Turning off updates (is that even possible , short of disconnecting the modem??) does expose you to the slim but real possibility that you won’t have a fix to an obscure bug that Ford found that is lying silently in waiting until one day you hit just the right circumstances, the code goes down some strange path and boom, there ya go…stuck somewhere with no radio, or seats that won’t move, or an engine that refuses to start.
A slim but non-zero chance.
