2024 PB. Taken it to a few dealers all say its "normal" but the drivability of my PB is not smooth. Heres a few scenarios to explain the issues and if anyone else thinks its normal.

  • Stop & Go traffic (0-20mph)
    • dead stop in traffic
    • Hit gas pedal
    • engine kicks on and will shakes entire truck for a second
    • accelerate a bit more the truck will shift and during 1-4 gears you can very much feel each shift
    • let off gas pedal, engine shuts off, electric drive kicks in, can definitely feel the electric motor kick in or the gas engine turning off either or but this transition is not smooth either
    • hit the brake
    • repeat
  • Backroad driving (0-50 mph)
    • its really the same thing above except i feel it less, im not sure if thats bc im driving faster so the effects of the jerkness is less.

anything beyond gear 4 its smooth. its just that low gear start stop. driving or back road driving where its just not a smooth experience and dealerships say its normal. Some forums say its normal to feel the transition but idk how much of a feeling it should be.

I hate to break it to you brother but this is the “normal” 10 speed. My truck does the same thing. Everyone I’ve talked to with the 10 speed has the same issue.

Hate to tell you, but there has never been any expectation that gear shifts in a transmission should be undetectable, especially in a 3 ton truck. The closer ratios in the 10 speed make shifts less noticeable, but undetectable, nah.

Lower gear shifts at low speed when the engine is cold are a little rougher and more noticeable than when the engine is up to operating temperature, especially when it skips 2nd gear and goes directly from 1 to 3. Also that from a stop, or low speed, if I press the accelerator firmly the ICE fire up combined with electric torque, engagement and shifting can be fairly vigorous. If I'm gentler on the pedal the transitions are much less apparent.

The transitions to/from electric at higher speeds are often so seamless that I have to look down at the tach to see which driving mode the truck is in.

The description of what you're objecting to as "normal" seems reasonable. You may have unattainable expectations for a 3 ton truck. It is a lot of mass to move. That requires energy, the application of which will be apparent. The more energy you request the more apparent its application will be.

I'd suggest trying a little lighter foot on the accelerator pedal from stopped or low speed electric and see if that does not smooth out the operation considerably. The "jerky driving" from your header may pertain more to driver technique than truck.

That is because the combination of ICE and electric motor assist make the PB response to pedal quicker and sharper than a traditional gas engine by itself that takes a little time to respond to increased fuel flow and increased rpms to generate more torque. The addition of electric motor torque to the ICE fire up is instantaneous. Unlike ICE electric motors apply maximum torque at 0 rpm, and the electric motor stays engaged when the ICE fires up. That is especially noticeable at low speed. That's a feature not a bug, but the quicker and more vigorous response may be what you are experiencing.

Our experience with 3 hybrid cars and a hybrid truck from Ford is that Ford has done an elegant job with the transition to/from electric/ice. It is one of the areas they have managed better than the other hybrids we have experienced. We also have learned to drive them a little differently to take advantage of their features.

I have a 2024 PB and can NEVER tell when it shifts gears and can never tell when I’m is electric mode.

Buying more stuff for this truck
That's not my experience.
My girl nicknamed my powerboost " Jerky"
Has a very rough shift /engine on-off strategy in heavy traffic .
It's the same way with 3 different drivers so it's not all on my driving.

My 21 Powerboost was the same way. It was still smoother than the 18 F150 3.5L 10 Speed it replaced though. However, when it transitions from electric to ICE mode, you could always feel it on my truck no matter how carefully I applied the throttle. It wasn't terrible, but it is a downside of a hybrid powertrain with such a small battery. I think if Ford had allowed a bit more acceleration in all electric mode, it would have mitigated that roughness to an extent.

You can use Forscan to reset the adaptive transmission learning and see if that helps. I have a 2024 Rav4 Prime PHEV and the difference between that car in hybrid mode vs. the F150 PB is night and day in terms of smoothness, but they're drastically different vehicles with a much different powertrain implementation.

I, non pb, also have very jerky shifting intermittently through gears 1-6 with 1-4 being way more often. I have my parents truck as a reference and can say its not normal. Their truck, a normal 3.5, is luxury smooth.

I think switching to full synthetic and using premium gas helped smooth mine out.

Except when coming from a stop, unless I notice the tach, I can never tell when or whether it switches between ICE and elec.

As for rough shifts ... I'm not sure what people are expecting. Its a truck. I can't tell any real difference than any other auto trans truck I've driven. It depends on what you're asking of it, through the throttle. Sometime barely perceptible, sometimes, shifting with a purpose.

I'd hate to disregard someone who is having real problems but it doesn't bother me, if I feel the transmission doing it's job, so long as it is performing that job effectively.

I get that the dealers often blow people off with "thats normal". Maybe test drive a different truck, or someone you trust, to drive yours?
