Ok, I kinda feel a bit silly, but I would rather be safe than sorry. What aftermarket oil filter does this 2022 engine take. I have a 2016 also, but it seems that it’s not the same filter, at least by what K&N shows. (They don’t show one for the 2022) Is it the same engine design as earlier models? Any recommendations on oil type. I usually use full synthetic whatever viscosity is recommended. Thanks guys!

Use a high quality / reputable brand filter.

It is illegal for manufacturers to deny warranty due to aftermarket market parts being used. Unless they can prove the specific part used was the direct cause of the failure.

For instance, Ford can deny warranty repair if your engine seizes due an aftermarket Fumoto quick oil change valve failing* and rapidly draining all the oil onto the road.

* I have no idea if any such valves have ever failed - it is just an illustration.

Mobil 1 oli filter is what I use with Mobil 1 synthetic. The 3.5 eco uses 5w - 30.

I change every 9000 miles.

If you really want to go down a rabbit-hole, OP, the Bob Is The Oil Guy forums are interesting.

While I agree with @EricR when it comes to the majority of modifications, the oil filter is a critical component of the engine and it is not worth risking a denied warranty claim after a major failure due to an aftermarket filter.

Agree, especially when the quality of the MC FL500S is so good.

FoMoCo FL500S is below average at best, I won't use them. The micron (u) filtration rating is far from great, 80% at 20u, nope, not for me. I'll keep my Champ XL's or something with 99% at 20u.

Ummm, there's more to a filter than just micron rating.
In fact, flow is a very important aspect as well, and arguably is in opposition to filtration.
Too much of either negatively affects the other.

I'm not saying that the Motorcraft is the be all and end all, but it's actually a Purolator filter and regarded as much better than "below average" filter.

I just read in the Ford Service manual for my 2022 F150 with the 5.0 engine the the oil filter is NOT to be lubricated. Has anyone ever hear about this?

1. NOTE: Do not lubricate the O-ring seal.
Install a new oil filter.
Torque :
Stage 1: 44 lb.in (5 Nm)
Stage 2: 180°

I've seen that on other vehicles for the official procedure as well. Best guess, putting oil on the seal allows you to over torque the filter very easily.

I've never had an issue doing it the old school way. Lube the seal with fresh oil and turn 3/4 to 1 full turn after it makes contact. For me, that's hand tightened.

Actually, putting oil on the o ring allows the ring to seal without twisting and tearing the o ring. Putting the filter on hand tight and turning it 3/4 turn after contact is usually sufficient.
