It is interesting to read all of the armchair engineers who think they know more about the frequency of oil changes than the engineers who designed the engine do.
It is also interesting to consider that design engineers are quite often, if not always, constrained by considerations other than making the machinery last as long as possible. Stuff like extended oil changes to woo customers with low maintenance costs, things like that.

RE: Extended oil changes... etc. That's why I do oil analysis to determine change intervals. Hence my comment about design engineers seeking to just get you to your next trade-in.

Not too mention CAFE and EPA requirements which often sacrifice durability as well.

Truck dummy here, and scheduling my first maintenance check on my truck now that I have 8,500 miles on it. I figured going to the Ford dealer for this first one is a good idea, just to make sure everything is going well, and I don't have a loose screw somewhere (other than my brain). I presume they go through a thorough first-visit process.

Wondering if other F150 folks (that don't change their own oil) use their local Jiffy Lube-type places, or if you go every time to your Ford dealer. I know the price difference is big, and with past vehicles, I've always used the oil change places.

Thanks for any opinions.
in a big motor (like a power plant turbine) you check the numerous magnets, wiegh them, and use vibration analysis looking for bearings and gears with wear.. from the noise they put out. You look over a period of time watching for a bearing to get noisy or leave a magnet full..

our little trucks are not worth all that. But, i will agree the first change after 5 hrs of operation is so important. Below is my ‘24 yukon first change and i just ran a magnet over the pleated material in the filter.. all you can say is yikes!.. drain also had some metal in it… a picture better proves it.

I change oil on a new vehicle before 500 miles
I do it again at 2500
Then again at 5k
I generally stick to a 5k OCI

Unfortunately I was not able to do one at 500 miles, or even 1000. By the time I got the truck home on its maiden voyage I had put 1300 on it. I do have an appointment to get it changed tomorrow though.

I would almost consider getting an oil analysis done next service. That doesn’t look good at all.

I always try to encourage everyone to change their own oil. However, if people are not able to change it I do recommend going to the dealer. I will caution you though on the fact that there will not be a thorough first visit process for your oil change. Your oil change will be accomplished by the least qualified mechanic AKA the quick lube tech. Oil changes do not generate a lot of income for the dealer, so they will get you in and out as fast as they can.

The reason I recommend going to the dealer is if there's ever an oil related event they will be the only ones to have touched your truck. In the world we live in today the dealer will point the finger at anybody to get out of warranty claims.

As for oil will change intervals I was stay very clear on giving you advice on that. There are countless threads on this subject, all I will state is to do your research and change it accordingly.

Ford engineers recommend I change oil between 5 & 7.5k miles, so I do at 5k miles.

I changed my 2024KR at 1000 miles at Pep boys with full synthetic, used them because I also had them install my Valvomax oil drain plug just before I had the complete Talons Garage skid plate kit. At 5k, 10K, and for each 5k afterwards, I went to the Ford dealer using my Extended Service Plan to get all my scheduled maintenance done.

On the one hand.. it was picked up in the filter.. on the other hand.. below 30um just goes on through the filter... like thousands of grinders? i still have 59k left on the warranty. and if you do a oil check.. it is below i think 15 um where they find things in those checks.

As an engineer... i look this stuff on the magnet.. and wonder.. did it come from rockers? rollers up there.. was it from rods-maybe clearances aren't great there.. of course all the bearings.. the main surface bearing on the crank.. it's a 5.3 and i had a couple of them before. i am not sure the gm build craftsmanship is in there like it was.. my last one was a '18. it was pretty clean. every change..

There is my 2.7 F-150 change at 1700 miles... i think it was 30 miles for first change. Not much on it... its a nice quiet motor.
