I don't know.
I'm not convinced that the new axles really co$t any more than the original design. If so, it's not by much.

For whatever reason Ford chose the original design, I don't think anyone thought the application would fail like it did. Heck, I'm not even convinced that every original axle would fail, although the new design probably is more robust considering.

Have mine in for inspection and oil
Change today. I called last week to try and get the parts there to do the axle. At first they said no problem and would order them. They then called back little while later saying they couldn’t order them untill the truck was there and they sent pics of the odometer and door jam sticker..

My dealer set up an appointment for tomorrow to install the axles. So since it's 30 miles or so away, I called to make sure the parts were in before driving over there. I got the same crap "Well since we checked it and your's is not broken, we won't be replacing them." I asked "So do we have to go through all this crap again? " There is a new letter that apparently no one at the dealership has read except whomever I spoke to last week. She found it and told me I had to bring the truck over to have photos taken of the VIN and Odometer before they can order the parts.

I called the dealership, and they had no problem scheduling the replacement and ordering the parts. I will certainly call before I go down there to make sure the parts are actually there.

First mistake: assumed the first person I spoke with at the dealership was providing accurate information regarding the dealership's process. Truck is being held (I'm fine with that) at the dealership and parts will likely be here next week. I will likely be getting a rental.

So after a long conversation with them, they are coming to the house to take the pictures. They said Ford wanted to keep certain dealers from ordering 5000 axles and them not having any to distribute. Ford should have records of how many trucks they built and sold with the Max-Tow and this problem.
They should order that many axles and a few extras in case of defective or damaged ones. After being strung along for over a year they should be willing to work around the clock and through weekends to get them all fixed. Of course that would only be if they cared about their customers.

If it’s solely the design, then would not all the Max Tow be recalled? I’m under the impression some are not.

Same. I had to text a picture of my odometer and VIN also. The only difference is that I had just gotten home from getting my new axles from them. ?
mine were replaced about a month ago...i still need to see what the part numbers the axles they installed are.

so are you getting the new fix even though yours were just changed? or did you actually already get the new ones?

here at ford right now waiting for inspection, apparently it also needs a rear camera recall done

Update: parts been ordered, need to leave the truck to complete repairs. Nothing was broken yet but they will replace

My truck went into the dealer yesterday for an e-brake issue and asked about the TSB. I was told the fix is only for trucks that have broken bolts. Has this changed to replace them regardless if the bolts have not loosened or broken?

Once they got the necessary pre-order pictures of your truck, why do you have to leave the truck?

My parts arrived at the dealership this morning. I have scheduled for this Thursday for replacement. Took over a week for parts to arrive at dealership.

Yep. My truck went into the dealer for an e-brake issue and she told me the same...that the fix is only for trucks that have experienced the broken bolts, and the fix is not a new design.
That's simply indicative of someone still working from the previous recall document and procedure. I guess you have to print the current recall document and provide it TO your dealership for them to catch up with the program? ???

The previous recall procedure WAS to replace axles ONLY on trucks with a sheared bolt. AND they had to provide Ford with a picture of the sheared bolt. It clearly stated this in the document. (and I had to provide the document myself because the parts guy didn't know about the picture and Ford kicked the order request back)

The new recall procedure doesn't require a sheared bolt picture, but does apparently require evidence that the parts order is for a specific vehicle, rather than just inventory for the parts department. It kinda makes sense to avoid inventory hoarding by some dealerships. Although it would make sense to allow dealerships a buffer of a few pieces, just to afford real-time recall work to be performed.

Does the updated recall still require a sheared bolt before the dealer does the replacement?

Absolutely not.

The reason for the requirement of a sheared bolt AND proof (picture) actually makes sense if you think about the logistics.

Ford KNOWS that the permanent recall solution is going to be a different redesigned axle/hub assembly. But they still have to perform warranty repairs using the current design, while they are gearing up for the official recall remedy.

So to avoid dealerships inventoring thousands of axle/hub assemblies that would eventually just end up in a scrap yard, they were requiring verified need of a soon to be obsolete part.

Now that the new designed axle/hub assembly is in production, dealerships can now perform the actual official recall, rather than the previous interim procedure.
