WTF NC!

I took my truck into a tint place today to get tint installed, a PPF, and a ceramic coating. They asked me what tint level I would like. NC has a 32% tint level law on front and passenger windows, anything you want on the back, and nothing on the windshield.

I told the installer I didn't want to have to hassle with passing inspections so just go as dark as you can evenly around the entire truck and just put a clear film on the windshield to block heat and UV rays. They installer told me having the clear film would not pass inspection.

Everything I have read said you couldn't have film on the windshield due to safety for the police, which I thought was B.S. to begin with because I have never seen anyone get pulled over and the cops approach from the front of the vehicle, but I was will to play their stupid little game.

The installer told me if the inspection place puts a meter on it, it will not pass because it blocked sun just a little bit. It cant block ANYTHING.....AT ALL.....NO PASS GO.....NO COLLECT $200.....

I asked him if we was serious. All I wanted to do was protect the dash from cracking in the future (as I had a Honda that the sun destroyed from the inside out) as well as not feel like I was driving in an oven when I first got in my truck in the summer. He said unfortunately he was. So I then asked if they knew of any place that might skip the tint inspection and he said he has heard about a place 45min north of him...and you have to talk to the right person...in person...and take it in on a Sat. when the NCDOT inspection guy is not around.

So I skipped the installation of the windshield crystal clear see-the-all-the-freaking-way-through tint and am now here venting to you.

Thanks for listening.
NC can go who-ha itself in my opinion!

I am so sorry man. Here in Oklahoma...we have tint laws but nobody cares about them. Even the cops have dark ass tint lol. You would really have to piss one off really bad for you to get a tint ticket. Almost everyone here has tint. My truck has 50% on the windshield, and 5% all around lol. Also, no vehicle inspections here. You should move!

Its udder B.S.
I read NC passed a law that troopers will no longer pull you over for tint violations, but if they pull you over for speeding...they will go ahead and tack on a tint penalty if they are in the mood.

The more forum posts I have read the more I have seen recently "I have had my car\truck for 4,5,10 years...and never got dinged for my tint, but I got hit this year..." That was the whole reason I was just like...eh...not worth my time to fight it, just go clear.

and now I cant even do that. Thanks government...for once again telling me what I can and cant do with my property that has absolutely no effect on anyone other than me.

Tis a stupid law, however, they deserve credit for outlawing something we should all agree on…

I couldn't imagine having to go to a state vehicle inspection station each year. We don't even have emissions here. I tint all vehicle windshields and side windows. For pedestrian safety 20% should be the darkest for front sides. Factory on the rear is plenty for me. Granted if it were cheap and easy the electrically adjustable would be preferred.

If you don't tint your windshield in FL, you can literally melt at a stoplight from the proximity of the sun, so while it may be technically illegal, about 30% of the cars in FL have tinted windshields and the cops don't seem to care unless you're going more than 20mph over the limit anyway.

Only people that follow the rules, suffer from the rules. I don’t like driving my wife’s car because it has “legal” tint, and it’s not enough for S.C.

I have 50% on my windshield and 20ish on the front windows and it’s comfortable.

Tint is a safety concern for LEO, thus the laws. I assure you, NC safety inspections are otherwise a joke, have you seen some of the shitboxes on the road? Rolling death traps!

When I bought my truck I was cooking at the stoplight right by tint world. I feel like they wanted to find the place that concentrated the heat at their location. It was one of those “how much is it?” and the response was “how much you got?” kinda hot days.
I didn’t even get a reach around and now because I was driving for a couple weeks without tint my left arm is permanently darker than my right lol.

OP I would find the inspection station that will hook you up and get that done. I lived in CA for 3 years and if you know the guys at the station they tend to let little things go. I lived in Houston as well and they required inspections (not tint) and they were a joke. Just another fee for the government assholes to waste on some pet project.

It's funny because I think the factory windshield is like 70% tinted isn't it? I thought the label on it says that.

The times I hate all the glass and panoramic roof on my F150 is when I'm at a rest area, on one of my long distance drives, trying to take a nap after 8-10 hours of driving. That's when you can get microwaved by all that sun shining through the acres of glass.

Put some XPEL ceramic film on that thing.

I'll never forget my last "drive" on the 440 around Raleigh, we'll just call it a special place.

In case anyone is wondering what the Carolina Squat is, here's a truck with said modification and it's brilliant owner.
