This is my first time using FDRS. I initiated the APIM sync module s/w update process. I went through the steps as directed, finally was instructed to remove the USB stick, insert it into the truck's USB port, and wait for a pop-up window on the car's screen, and then wait to be instructed to turn the vehicle off and wait for 10 minutes before returning and starting the vehicle.

I waited 10 minutes and never got the first pop-up window, so I turned the vehicle off, left it, and came back 10 minutes later and restarted the vehicle. Again I got no pop-up windows. After that, I went to "System Updates" on the Sync screen, hit update details, and no updates. Tried one more time but still nothing. The only notice I'm getting is USB1 detected. My USB is labeled with a 6 digit name. I then went into FDRS and checked yes but the updates were unsuccessful. Basically, all applications failed. I am trying again to load the files on a new USB 21 F150 Platinum VIN: 1FTFW1ED2MFB86637

Question: Why did you run a PMI process on your APIM?

The reasons for failure recorded in PTS the two times you tried to update it are:

Procedure Unsuccesful - ParseAndCompareFlashActionApplications Unable to obtain software binary file: MU5T-14H009-FCG

Procedure Unsuccesful - com.ford.dsp.domain.vehicle.apps.readvin.exceptions.ReadVinException: Error reading VIN

I am not an expert by any means, but posting this here for someone with more knowledge to have more info to help you.

I thought that's what I had to start with. Bottom line is I have no clue what I'm doing. I've got one day left on a two day license and would appreciate any guidance on what updates I should run in sequence to unlock my truck. Truck has been stuck on Sync 20301. I purchased it last month this way (not knowing what I was getting myself into).

No, a PMI is only done when a new APIM is installed to make sure it is configured properly to the truck. With that said, I don't think doing a PMI causes any problems. I would try clicking the APIM and try running a module repair procedure. Name the USB something shorter than 6 letters. I named mine sync. Try reformatting the USB drive again freshly, close FDRS and reopen it, perform another network scan and try the update from the beginning.

When I updated my truck, it was passed the 20301 point, so I never had to recover that module. I don't know if anything special is required to do so. Just to be sure: You are inserting the USB into the slot under the touchscreen and not the one in the center console, correct?

Resetting the Sync module won't hurt. You can try to reset it before the module repair/update procedure.
Just ran the reset procedure and I was instructed to run a self test on the APIM which passed with no DTC's. What should I run next, APIM module config, s/w update or connectivity?

DO NOT RUN THE MODULE UPDATE REPAIR YET!

You have to buy some special equipment before attempting. As soon as you run it the first time, a 20-day clock starts. If you don’t finish the procedure within 20 days your APIM is locked and you have to replace it.

Read through TSB 22-2404 before proceeding to see if this is something you want to try on your own if standard updating procedures do not work: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2022/MC-10226775-0001.pdf

I started the process but aborted it, will this start the 20 day clock?

And this is why I am hesitant to offer help on this thread.

You were dead right about the PMI, though.. Not the first thing to try. Not the right tool here. He should have tried the “conventional” form of updating first using the APIM file under the S/W tab. If that doesn’t work, he’s probably in the unfortunate recovery procedure world given his Sync version. Although I am hesitant to say so, he might want to leave it for a dealer. If they lock it, they have to replace it.

This is the process that requires connecting directly to the APIM with the USB cables? I would fee comfortable trying it, but I can see why not everyone would.

Yeah, so would I. But we are starting to see some very careless behavior and carelessness with this procedure has consequences.
