It popped up a USB code 0 error on the sync screen and FDRS said it was unable to communicate with the vehicle. Check cables and connections.

That’s not good. I can’t tell if you have a hardware problem or you induced an error that ordinarily would not be there. The only thing I can recommend at this point is to tell FDRS that the update failed, erase the USB and start from scratch, following the instructions that FDRS gives you. Failing that, you have a problem above my pay grade.

And throw that damn Google whatever away.

Success! Now an APIM update appeared.
Bueno! The USB 0 error must have been because the connection timed out.

The APIM is going to take a looooong time. Just follow the FDRS instructions. Don’t be spooked if, when you restart the truck, you get a blank pop-up that only has two radio buttons at the bottom that say “details” and “close.” Just press close, remove the USB and tell FDRS the update was successful and go from there. Same thing with the next GWM that shows up.

One question regarding thumb drive download. I'm doing the first APIM update and it said to start the engine. Do I keep the engine running the whole time it downloads? Can I shut the ignition off? Do I leave it in the key on engine off position?

You need to leave the truck running until it tells you to restart the vehicle.

I'm downloading an APIM update with the ignition on and engine off, and my truck had a pop-up that said to turn ignition off or start engine to save battery. There was no option to leave the ignition on alone and the truck shut off after about a minute. Is there a way around this for the longer operations? My battery is holding 12.9v or so with the power supply hooked up so I don't think it was triggered by a low state

The APIM finished and another GWM appeared. I'm now on Sync 22192 rev 498.
Oh, this is interesting. You have a couple of more APIMs to go. Keep applying the GWMs and APIMs until you’re finished. You still have 22293 and 23031 to go. You will be at this awhile.

It shouldn’t do that unless it’s sensing a battery issue. If you started with a fully charged battery and you have a battery charger connected, you should be able to do the download with the truck in ignition on/engine off mode. If you didn’t start with a fully charged battery and/or you have an inadequate (or no) battery charger, then you might have to bite the bullet, follow the instructions and run the whole process with the engine running.

Thank You, it only took a couple of minutes for that to happen. One more question for anybody, on the left side of the screen the GWM is orange. What does that mean and should I be worried about it during the updates?

Also, now that that usb is in and running, the system updating prompt popped up for a few minutes and is gone now. It's been off the screen for about 10 or 15 minutes but I haven't seen any prompts for success or to turn the vehicle off. Anyone know if that's a normal condition, if there's an issue, or if I need to restart the truck to try again?

Thanks JEB. I'm using the recommended battery charger from Amazon and it's in the correct mode but I did have a notice pop up that said the SOC is low. I checked the charger and it's working so I told it to proceed with download.
