Posting just FYI

Drive Axle Shaft Assembly Set | 630-052 | Rear Axle Shaft Assembly Kit | Dorman Products

Product Description
The bolts that secures the right and left rear hubs to the axle on certain 2021-2023 Ford F-150 trucks equipped with the Max Tow package have been known to shear off after day-to-day driving, a modest number of towing trips or ventures off-road. Failure symptoms include the sound of brakes that are dragging (a result of the brake rotor moving freely against the hub), a rattle caused by sheared bolt heads trapped inside the assembly and in extreme cases, severe changes in handling. The dealer solution is to replace axle assemblies with the same original equipment design, inviting a future similar failure. Our patent-pending Dorman OE FIX axle assembly eliminates the thin-walled internally-threaded axle end of the factory shaft design and the failure-prone bolt that connects it to the hub. The upgraded axle shaft features an externally-threaded male end and matching nut to capture the axle end, resulting in a more secure connection between the hub and the axle. The assembly is designed for a straightforward installation and a longer-lasting repair that can prevent potentially dangerous vehicle control issues and multiple dealership repair visits that can keep a customer vehicle out of commission for several days. This kit contains the axle shafts, spacers and nuts required to replace one left rear axle assembly and one right rear axle assembly. For only the left side assembly, select Dorman part number 630-050; for the right side assembly, select Dorman part number 630-051.

tagging @Snakebitten , curious to hear your thoughts

Me, I find this interesting, but I've not had a bolt break yet, still just chilling and waiting to see what Ford comes up with under the recall .....

Just had an odd (perverse?) thought .... What if this is also Ford's fix and a dispute over Dorman's "patent pending" delays Ford implementing the recall remedy? ?

Very promising.

For IF/When I ever need one and out of warranty.

Not sure I understand how a sheared bolt leads "(a result of the brake rotor moving freely against the hub)", or "potentially dangerous vehicle control issues"

And it looks like a no-brainer solution, but I'm not an engineer.

It is a no brainer. Throwing a grade 12.9 bolt in there could still cause problems, this time pulling out the threads. I bet that is why Ford hasn't fixed it yet, they realize that they need to completely redo the design, but the accountants I am sure are not happy.

The nut idea has much more mass and strength. That is how most, if not all CV axles and solid axle shafts work, they use axle nuts, which even for a 200 hp passenger car those axle nuts and threaded stubs can be very beefy.

If you want to keep the factory design, you'd want chromoly axles and grade 12.9 bolts, but I'd still want a larger diameter bolt.

Yeah, seems the advertising department got a bit carried-away there

BTW, did response to this thread mess with your nice signature block?

How did you find the link for this thread ? Were you just searching on their site or just in general ?

And between Dorman and Ford, who has the better patent lawyers, hah!

Full disclosure - I ran across this post on the other forum (I'm subscribed to that thread) and did further digging on Google before posting here.

I haven't been over there in almost two years. hah!
I very rarely check-in there, but I do have that one thread set for new post email notification. Granted, the vast majority of the posts are old news or BS, but I'm glad I saw this one of new interest.

A basic design that I believe has been around for some time. It’s actually been suggested here quite some time ago. I just believe that Ford wants to go as cheap as possible. Also it doesn’t seem that they have to come up with a fix as the date for it has come and gone and so has probably some of the trucks involved by now.
