Towing more than a 10,000 pound trailer requires a commercial driver's license (CDL) .....
That is not correct in Texas (or any other state?).

You don't need a CDL unless you are towing for commercial purposes or the vehicle + trailer GCWR exceeds 26,000 pounds. As long as you meet those two criteria, you're good with a regular (non-commercial) Class C TXDL (see the back of your non-CDL Class C TXDL).

22 Lariat SuperCab, thanks for point this out. I've seen it as you have stated ... and as below.

a Class A CDL is required if the combined weight of the tow rig and trailer/load exceed 26,000 pounds AND the trailer's assigned GVWR is more than 10,000 pounds.

The back of my license seemed incomplete. I'll have to keep searching as I have not found any specific regulations regarding this on an official TX.gov website. Everything seems to be AI generated lately.

The key is "AND" not "OR"

Read very carefully because it can be rather confusing - but you might start here

Thank you ALL for the great information. I'm leaning towards rolling the dice with the XL7 axle. Just the upgraded receiver hitch/bumper would be nice when trailering a car trailer. I love to stay WAY under designed limits, is my nature. Having a (very light) 5th wheel, and being heavy packers, more capacity is better. IF I get a beefier frame, or anything else - bonus I guess. All of your information was HUGE and I downloaded the order sheets to make it easy at the dealer - so THANK YOU!!

My build will be a white XLT 301A Supercrew/5.5 bed/5.0/3.73 Max Tow. I wont argue the EB or PB may be a better camping setup, especially with the onboard power but I'm old fashioned and just love a V8, love simplicity, and will just bring our propane powered Honda 2000 when boondocking. I'm one of those guys who never understood the televisions with the built in VHS players haha.

Options will be blackout package with console (for some strange reason you must get the blackout package for the Max Tow on the 301A), Tow Haul Package, Max Tow Axle, Floor liner, Tailgate dampening, spray in bedliner, and hard fold tonneau. That's it! It will have to console/console shifter, painted bumpers, black 18" wheels and black running boards. I like a basic truck and would have bought the STX had you been able to at least get power drivers seat. That is a must at me 6'6" and my wife 5'1"

Buyer2021, yes I am on the Escape Forum also. User name is "Joe and Cherie". I do see your posts there quite a bit. We are excited to be upgrading the to Escape over out 17' EggCamper within the next year. Although the EggCamper has a big spot in my heart - its been wonderful, and it feels so roomy inside (no bulkheads or cabinets, etc - its just a big open room)!! We started with a Casita 17SD. At 6'6", that didn't last long haha! Then the EggCamper. Soon the 5.0TA. I look forward to learning all about the best 5th wheel hitch setup next!

Please just keep in mind that there is no single "best" for everyone; there are folks happily towing the Escape 5.0 with most every hitch system on the market.

Just like with F150 engines, what matters are your preferences / wants / needs.

Couple things I remember researching before I bought my Max Tow in 2022 was thicker front stabilizer, springs a little heavier, upgraded cooling/ rad sizes, and thicker frame. The 5.0 with 3.73 is an excellent towing combo, with 36 gallons it gets great range towing.

Its a $400 option. Just how much upgraded equipment should one expect for $400? It doesn't appear to add any payload in a 4X4 (well, 5# in an EB, none on the 5.0), but does add 200# in a 4X2, so it wouldn't appear to add much spring - or they derated the payload to stay at 7100 GVW. Either way, I'll bet payload becomes a problem before theortical max. tow capacity does.

Frankly, acknowledging the 36 gal. tank, for $400, considering the axle and upgraded (if slightly) brakes, I'd be suprised if there is anything else coming with it. May have been different in '21, but I still have a hard time swallowing the idea of three different frames (at the same length)...with no change in GVW or payload.

The heavy duty axle has a 3/4-floating axle design and a 9.75-inch ring gear. This contrasts with standard F-150 axles, which typically have a semi-floating design and may not have the same heavy-duty components. The heavy-duty axle is designed to handle higher Gross Axle Weight Ratings (GAWR) and is often paired with larger brakes and thicker axle tubes.
I have this in my 2022 Lariat w/max tow. I tow a Flagstaff 26 RBWS 29"6" travel trailer with no problem.
