Hey, quick question for some folks with more experience than me. This is my first winter with the truck. Are the bumper proximity sensors affected by the cold at all?

Since it got cold and icy here in Michigan my proxy sensors have been throwing warnings when there is nothing there. I cleared away some snow/ice, and even took it in for a wash with underbody rinse hoping they were just dirty, but that didn't help at all. I had it in for an oil change so I asked the dealer to look into it - they ended up completely reprogramming every module in the truck since I haven't gotten any OTA updates in a long time. APIM, IPMA, PSCM, IPC. It was fixed for a day, but just this morning I'm getting a reverse collision assist system not available warning.

Does anyone else have issues with this system in the cold/snow? Or do I have some other gremlin I need to keep chasing? Thanks for any thoughts.

Ice/snow buildup on the sensors is the issue.

Ok, sounds like I'm not alone. Thanks guys.

I physically wiped all the sensors so I know they're clean and clear. Would road salt/water/etc affect anything on the inside of the bumper that I could clean?

They will definitely be messed up after a car wash and then they freeze. I deal with (or shut it off) because I like my truck clean even during the winter. At least you got them to update your truck though ??.

It happened on my 2018 in the winter a lot, my 2020 not as much, my 2022 rarely.

I rarely drive my 22 STX but a while back I started it up while it was cold but not nearly as cold as last 2 weeks maybe 28F when it happened but I immediately had dash warnings “Pre Collision Sensor failure “
I drove a couple miles and turned ignition off for a few minutes
When I restart truck it was gone and my sensors were spotless so definitely issues with sensors I’m thinking they aren’t the quality they should be
I do much wish they were making vehicles with electronic systems available in 2014 like my Tacoma or my 2014 Civic
Way too much crap to faiI feel and I fear ownership for 10 years will be a massive collective of expensive issues

Any weather fart cross-ways can trigger these things, sloppy salty roads to wet sloppy snow and especially freezing drizzle.

Then be prepared for sensor failure warnings after your truck is washed. This is continuous issue until winter is gone.

I just shut mine off the moment I get in the truck. They have malfunctioned since day 1

that was probably dirt or frost on the front window behind the mirror, or the sun shining strongly on it. There’s a camera there that is that collision sensor. When the frost melts or it‘s cleaned it fixes itself.

Most of these sensors are ultrasonic sensors. Ultrasonic sensor operate by sending sound waves out that reflect back to the sensor which then detects objects in its path. The speed of sound waves is different in different temperatures, this can definitely cause false detections in extreme temperatures both cold and hot.

Thanks I’ll have to look for that camera I’ve certainly never seen it
