Am I playing with fire if I don’t get an extended warranty with a 2023 Powerboost?

Yeah in those states you have to buy from an in state dealership. So you cannot get a cheaper prices warranty from a dealership in another state, like Granger.

But there are easy works arounds. Like simply using someone else’s address at the time of purchase.

I have never gotten an extended warranty on any vehicles I bought but I’m reconsidering it based on how complex the F150 is especially the Powerboost.


It would be nice to buy a discounted real Ford extended warranty. However I live in California so I can’t buy a cheap warranty out of state from Granger, Ziegler, or Flood Ford.

Should I buy an over priced warranty from a California Ford dealer or take my chances without?

Get the Ford ESP. I have a 3rd party one and its the biggest pain in the ass. But either way, absolutely get an ESP on your PB.

Absolutely buy the extended contract. The hybrid battery and system (which does include the transmission) is covered to 100K miles (I think). I had a 2021 PB and really loved the truck , BUT at 80K miles started having tons of problems with the transmission. After the THIRD time for extended repair, they agreed to replace the entire transmission to fix a problem (known back then, not sure what is up with that today). The dealer quoted me over $12,000 for a complete replacement of the transmission, which is the same as a standard F150, but has a motor attached somewhere in front of the torque converter. My dealer worked me a fair deal and I traded out to a 2023 non-PB truck which has been "ok" with issues - I bought the extended warranty for about $1800 (first time I have ever done that) and have been covered on about $5K of expenses! Starter, front air dam (four times), rear wheel bearings, rear shocks ... plus about 60 days of rental cars!! All covered, but for the $100 deductable, which they didn't charge me for the last time. Please click on my profile and you can read the PB transmission troubles I experienced - I don't want to bore everyone about all the details. I will say (and I mean this) - these Fords are much better than Rams, Toyotas and GMs - and I honestly believe the late '24 and '25 models will be much more reliable than my '21 and '23.

Like some others have posted here, I practically never buy an extended warranty - I just don't see the value. My truck was a very rare exception. These things are soooo complex, that even technicians get stumped by a problem, so yeah - I saw value in purchasing one. During the truck purchase process, a Ford ESP extended warranty was offered to me, and my jaw dropped when I saw the price, and declined. The F&I guy regrouped, and then offered me a third-party policy. To each their own, but I'm not a fan of those. Some 9 or 10 months after I bought the truck, I saw on this forum that Granger sells Ford ESP extended warranties. So, I got in touch with them, selected a plan - which was significantly less expensive that what my dealer offered - and purchased a plan using Ford points. I have no regrets. However, I have learned that depending upon where you live, some states don't let you purchase insurance across state lines (and at the end of the day, that's all an extended warranty is - insurance)., so in those cases, the buyer has to get a little creative.

I was looking at Granger's prices online. Not only is it significantly cheaper than other dealers like Flood or Zeigler, but they also allow you to pay over an 18 month period with no interest charges

I have a 2021 power boost I purchased new and I purchased an aftermarket extended warranty, my transmission failed at 75,000 miles and even with the warranty I still paid 3k out of pocket bc I wouldn’t accept a rebuilt transmission from the warranty company.

I had the dealer install the latest version of the transmission available which this was in late 2024 so hopefully I have the newest model with a lot of problems fixed, they replaced everything including the hybrid part, total cost was over 12k and I covered 3k of it.

Haven’t had any issues since, have about 10k miles on the new transmission, it’s still quirky just like they all are. But it’s under warranty for 3 years unlimited miles and then ford gave me a 10 year 175k powertrain esp for my troubles.

I have no troubles with this truck other than the transmission and all the recalls, and there isn’t anything else out there I really like, so I’m going to keep driving it for now.

Both California and Florida consider extended warranties to be insurance and do not allow you to purchase them from an out of state dealer. I'm sure there are work arounds though, as mentioned above.

I mean not by "common knowledge" but an official webpage(?) if exists? (I don't know, like 'federal insurance agency state branch' or whatnot. I know it is silly )
Any idea where to start if I do not want to be buried in hundreds of state law PDFs?

Those are the only two that I am aware of, but I could certainly be wrong. I believe that both were due to frequent natural disasters in those states and the legislation was mainly targeted at home and auto insurers to protect policy holders after one of these events. As to why they consider extended warranties insurance, I have no idea as it doesn't seem to be inline with the intent of the legislation.

Buying a warranty from an out of state dealer is not a good idea in any case. If you have a problem later are you going to fly to another state and hire an attorney?

Consumer protection in California is not perfect but it is far superior to that of most states, especially places like Florida which for many years have been the fraud capital of the USA.

The warranty mentioned in this thread is valid at any Ford dealership anywhere.

The hybrid components are 8y/100k anyway on my truck, but I think that is an across the board thing. I am in Massachusetts, though, so it is possible something is on the books. We do have a right to repair law, for example.

Like others, I purchased an extended warrantee. I got mine from Flood, did not see a material difference between Flood or Grainger. For my 24 PB I got the 10 / 100,000 as I generally keep my vehicles for a long time (last Ram was 14 years).

This is probably the first thing I have ever purchased an extended warrantee on. For something so expensive I decided I was not willing to repurchase in 3 yr / 36k miles if something bad happened.

At 30 months on my 22 XLT and priced a Grange warranty for 60K 85K an 100K. It isn't going to happen at these inflated costs. The truck has been solid with no other issues than the FORD stuff.

PB comes with a 8year 80K warranty on the related PB battery components if my memory serves me right.

Had a 21 PB and traded for a 22 when trading was good now the 22 is being kept. Will address the normal required maintenance and do the 60K mile things and hopefully keep most of the warranty money in MY POCKET.
