Great points and perspective sir.

As a first-time Ford truck owner, I have to intentionally separate the common 10R80, rear axle, and 3.5EB issues from the PB-specific problems. Not easy or even relevant perhaps because I own it all now! :D

There's nothing on the PB that really scares me long term. I'm more concerned about the ICE and trans long term, neither of which are a result of the PB specifically. All of the HV stuff is pretty straight forward. Modules from wrecked trucks are regularly available if new is too much $ to justify. The hesitation about the powertrain is misplaced. PBs get the same failures other trucks do. There's some dumb things they can patch out, but the benefits are much greater than the tradeoffs.

And Ford has been building Hybrids, tons of them, for a very long time.
A friends wife recently traded her Cmax in after 11 years and 125,000 miles. She was bored finally, according to him.
It ate a few 12V batteries (go figure) and some rear wheel bearings. Sync3 was a bit flakey at times and needed an occasional soft boot. Other than the, perfectly healthy.

I understand the what-if's concerns that modern complex vehicles present. But I'm too old to miss out on all the fun the consumer has offered today. I don't have time to be worried.

Those old Escape hybrids go forever and are relatively trouble free. GM made the Tahoe hybrid with the 6.0L Vortec in the 2000’s and those were pretty reliable too, only reason it didn’t stay was demand at that point was low. Ford shelved the 5.0 hybrid but with GM’s 6th gen small block V8 coming down the pipeline with hybrid options and the Stellantis Hurricane coming with hybrid options I believe Fords hand will be forced on unleashing the all ready designed 5.0 hybrid as well. The lofty goal of 2029 being the last ICE Mustang likely won’t become a reality with the current EV growth trend not nearly matching what Ford wanted. Hybrids are the likely future of emissions compliance until solid state batteries are readily produced here in the USA and not China. Once the geo-politics and infrastructure issues of EV’s are rectified I’ll be happy to jump. Right now they kind of suck monkey butt, but Toyota just had a breakthrough on solid state and thinks they will be mass producing them by 2030. That will change the game. Way less mass and way more energy storage. Todays Li-Ion sucks….these don’t.

Hi there,

I’m generally happy with my ‘22 XLT 2.7, but I’d like some more toys, so I’m upgrading to a ‘23 Lariat. I drive pretty hard, having my foot to the floor at least a couple of times per day and hope to keep the next truck to around 200,000 miles (I drive 30k/yr).
Which motor is more likely to put up to the abuse of being driven hard and put away wet? I love a good V8, but have heard mixed reviews about reliability of newer generation models.
I have a 2021 powerboost and it is a beast.

The Expedition has an Ecoboost powertrain. It will get Powerboosted if anything. Linear hybrid design would make the V8/10R80Hybrid powertrain very long.

I would immediately upgrade my truck if i could put an electric motor on the back of the 5.0

for science.. look honey i was responsible and bought a hybrid

A solid state equipped EV is the first EV I will want. You are talking 500+ mile range and 10 minute recharge times. I will finally be “responsible” at that point lol. No liquid electrolytes in the battery so the weight can be trimmed way down and energy storage goes way up. The EV’s being pumped out right now will look like a 1915 Model-T in a few short years. They shortfall against gas for recharge, have dismal range, and finding charging infrastructure is a hassle. This will all change with solid state. I’m excited for it actually. But all those with today’s electric vehicles kind of bought in at a sucky time and reaped no benefit. Those of us who wait will be getting a much better package with no inconveniences.

Tell that to the Stellantis inline-6. That will be much longer than a V8 hybrid by two whole cylinders, should they actually do it. Ram said eventually but so far nothing official.

Not according to the RAMCharger thread. 3.6L V6 N/A for the RAMCharger range-extending on-board generator.

That’s not a hybrid, that’s a BEV. Stellantis said the 3.0 I-6 will be equipped with hybrid tech in the future. The ICE in that has no physical connection to the driveline.

It's being called a EREV but okay. Some promised future turbo in-line 6 with an extended transmission housing and 3" drive shaft from Stellantis. A plug-in Powerboost would beat it but let's dream for a moment...

If I were Ford and wanted to destroy that abomination, I would design a large battery plug-in hybrid SuperDuty with the 5.0 mated to a hybrid 10R140 transmission.

Good night Irene. Best super-truck ever!

Seriously. The traction motor has instant low end torque while the 5.0 excels once we're up to speed. Complimentary motors flattening out dyno curves while flattening the competition!

Most EV owners leave home each day with a 'full tank' thanks in part due to overnight charging. Relying on public charging sucks, it's also harder on batteries. There's also several EVs on the market that can do a 15-80% recharge in 15 minutes today. The issue with having more ubiquitous new batteries is that china has the patents on all of the practical stuff. Solid state is a tough nut to crack due to dendrite formation (where a conductive crystalline path grows between the anode and cathode dead shorting the cell).

There's batteries right now able to charge 250 miles in 10 minutes, chinese of course. GM is set to use them. 90% of the battery plants being built in the US today don't use economically competitive chemistries. I'm not opposed to china'n china and just taking their IP and running with it.

Why does the length matter?

Inline 6's are some of the smoothest running engines out there.
