2022 F150 Powerboost XLT
Hello all- first post:

I have a 2022 XLT Powerboost with 80k miles (no warranty) that I bought in January this year. Recently I've been having some issues where in 8th, 9th, and 10th at highway speeds, the truck will jump 500ish rpms for a second and hesitate like there is a small loss of power, but its brief. It'll do it over and over again when going up any inclines or trying to accelerate in a high gear from 75mph and up. I picked up a bass boat yesterday about 180 miles from home. It weighs about 3500lbs. Within a few miles of leaving the shop, I got stranded on a 2 lane road going up a hill in tow haul with 8,9, and 10 locked out. "Stop Safely Now". It was in 4th or 5th and just felt like the bottom fell out of the truck with zero power. I walked away while making phone calls, came back, and the truck started again so I decided to baby it home. The highway drive was pretty flat and didn't have any issues. However, when I got into town, there's a section of interstate that goes up and over a decent sized ridge. I was doing 70 in the left lane when halfway up, it did the same thing. RPMs went through the roof, no acceleration, "stop safely now". I almost got hit by 2 semi trucks and barely managed to get it over to the shoulder. Was stranded there for 2 hours while the tow truck came. Towed to my house for now. That being said, while I was waiting, I pulled codes P0771 and P2884.

The crazy thing is that once the truck was dropped in my driveway, it fired right up and is showing no CEL or SES light on the dash. Shifts in and out of gear just fine. Drove it for a few laps around the neighborhood and it seems ok, but that was only about 30mph.

I'm pretty worried about what the fix might cost. I called my local dealership and they said to bring it in for diagnosis. I've read about PCM updates fixing things, but as a mechanical engineer, I feel like something acting this badly would have to be mechanical. These new generation systems are way over my head though with all of the fancy programming. I've read about TSB 23-2351 and will bring that up to the dealer if and when I can get it over there this week.

Anyone have any suggestions or similar issues? I absolutely love the truck other than this situation.

Configure your gauge cluster to view transmission temps, and see if anything lines up with high temps. I just had my transmission fluid replaced at 30k and the tech had the same issue. (stop safely now) Right off the rack after everything completed. Only way to reset it was to pull battery cable and re-start.

I tried looking on the dash to find the trans temp and couldn't find it. I was in a panic though. I'm going to have them check the fluid level and change it regardless.

Possible when the trans got hot the CDF drum sleeve moves causing trans to slipp.
maybe looking at having trans rebuilt with updated drum,

Had a similar issue on my '21 PB and it ended up being that the transmission was over filled when they worked on it last. Once that was resolved I've had zero issues.

@HammaMan messaged me yesterday and was able to pull all of my diagnostic codes remotely with my VIN (thanks man!). Looks like the CDF is shot. I limped it over to the dealership yesterday evening. They said it'll be early next week before they can even look at it, and from what I hear, parts are scarce right now so I guess I'm out of a truck for the foreseeable future.

Is that a recall for the CDF drum or are you out of pocket for the repair sir?

There's not a recall, but there's a TSB. It can be argued that they should cover it since it's been a widely known issue. I'll fight it regardless. It put me in an extremely dangerous position on the side of the road. Blind curve, very small shoulder, night time, etc.

Appreciate this post, OP I think is having multiple issues, ""at highway speeds, the truck will jump 500ish rpms for a second and hesitate like there is a small loss of power, but its brief. It'll do it over and over again when going up any inclines or trying to accelerate in a high gear from 75mph and up "" is exactly one of my issues. I checked my fluid level after reading your post and found it at "1" when it should be between 4-5 hot. (thats almost 1" higher on the dip stick.) heading out for a drive with my RV today over the grapevine, we'll see if it acts any different.

FYI Removed 1 liter+ with a antifreeze bulb style tester.

OP's problem is that he was sold a truck, likely under fraudulent pretenses, whose original symptoms were ignored resulting in the ultimate failure of the trans and hybrid drive unit.

Was just getting ready to respond to the reply before yours to bring this up.

The final diagnosis I got last week was that the transmission needs replacement to the tune of $11,000 plus tax (I'm out of warranty).

For anyone reading this, @HammaMan has been a blessing and a life saver during this whole situation. He reached out to me via PM after my first post and helped dig into my truck's history for me- history that can't be seen with Forscan or a simple code reader. Thanks to him, I've been able to compile a long digital paper trail of evidence that points to SERIOUS business ethics, if not outright fraud, on the part of the dealership I purchased from. For that reason, I have a scheduled meeting with my attorney tomorrow morning to see where we go from here.

This forum is lucky to have HammaMan.

speaking as an attorney myself, but not offering legal advice . . .

know that this is a fairly specific area, and don't be offended if your attorney offers to refer you to someone else. Similarly, be happy if it's something he feels comfortable with it (beyond the initial letter).

It's something that most of us could do, but it's specialized enough that I'd refer it out. (OK, I refer everything out at this point, being retired, but that's not the point).

It's all good, I know what you mean. My wife is an attorney (but not mine) so I've witnessed that a lot. I'm hoping and halfway believing that a letter will solve this, but you never know.

I was downright amazed as a young attorney when I saw how many things got straighter out by a single letter on letterhead!

And fairly quickly I came to understand that it was the art of making it clear that there was a spiked gauntlet under the velvet clove of the hand extended in peace . . .

I've been able to resolve similar things w/ a letter explaining in clear language the grievances and resultant harm, and the remedies being sought and the will to see it through. The funniest instance I've ever had was a debt collector trying to collect $20 I didn't owe, violate the FDCPA and end up paying me $1600. I maybe had bout 80 minutes or so into the entire event.
