My 22 F150 XLT has a build date of 10/2022. About a mile into my drive while in 2wd mode, a vibration noise came about while traveling 35/40 mph. It sounded almost as if you drove over rumble strips on the side of the road. As I let off the throttle and pulled over the noise went away. I proceeded to drive another mile at 35/40 mph and the same noise started once more so I reduced speed and pulled over where the noise stopped. This happened a total of 4 times on my 5 mile drive home. This was the first time hearing this noise and also the first time the vehicle has been parked outside in sub 30 degree temps since I bought it new in April of 2023.

I brought the truck to my local Ford dealership and explained the issue. I’ve explained that I’ve seen other owners on forums experiencing the same exact issue. My findings show the cause to be the IWEs or the check valve causing a lack of pressure. The shop foreman inspected and they were not able to duplicate the issue. However they advised I’m now the 3rd 2022 F150 owner to come in with this issue and that they are working with a Ford engineer for a solution. As of today, I was told I would be added to a list of data and once more data is obtained from others (unknown amount of time) I would receive a mailer that a fix has been secured. My issue is that it’s now the start of winter and I need to be confident in my 4x4. It’s frustrating that Ford knows what the issue is but will not jump on fixing it until others have reported issues.

If anyone has any documented solutions to what appears to be the beginning of a known issue it would be greatly appreciated.

Mine did this as well the day I drove it home from the dealership in January last year. I cycled the 4WD a few times and it went away. This has been 20k miles ago and it hasn't acted up since. I have read that these are electronic IWE's now and not vacuum like previous gen (could be wrong on that) and the cold weather is making the electronic ones act up

Here they come! Winter IWE issues. My theory is the grease is too thick or freezes up in the winter causing some issues for the electric motor that controls engagement.

My 2021 never did a thing re: IWEs, but my 2023 has done this a few times. Go figure.

‘22 PowerBoost for the win!!!!!

Seriously though, I’ve had to pull apart the IWE’s on past trucks and moved to a thinner “JD corn head” grease. Always worked great and never another problem.

Man these are popping up out of the woodwork with the weather changing. I've had it now 2x on mine when temps in the 20s. 3800 miles.

I think the biggest and most detailed thread on this forum is this one: https://www.f150gen14.com/forum/threads/intermittent-hum-or-howl-from-front-end.13723/

Bottom line I don't think anyone has found any solution, the complaints seem to be piling up. I 100% feel there is a problem here beyond just random defects. There is something about how the trucks are designed or assembled that is wrong. Something out of spec with parts. Its occurring on a few trucks that have fewer than 1000 miles... and I might agree with the poster above that this seems to be more 2022's and 2023's and not so much 2021s. But I am nearly certain they're all leaving the factory with this defect.

Regarding powerboost (I own one) I will need to check that I have the Electronic IWEs on my XLT. Nearly certain I do. I believe that it is the trucks with 4A (Lariat and higher) that no longer have IWEs. XLT and below I think still do (no 4A settings). I don't think engines matter. I'll crawl under my powerboost XLT to confirm though. I think these humming noises are all on XLs or XLTs.

Really? I did not know that! I thought all '22+ PowerBoost's were IWEless.

What I find odd is that this in not the first winter the EIWEs have gone through, but this seems to be the first winter (and just the beginning of it) where we hear of multiple issues

22+ w/ TOD transfer case do not have IWEs. Tremor / raptor / XLs / XLTs still have them. Lariat, Limited, and Platinum now have full-time shafts where the front axle is always engaged.

Worth mentioning this is anecdotally happening on both manual and auto transfer cases.

This was going on last year also. Mine was doing it once it got below freezing. I put it in 4H then back to 2H and it would stop. Happened a few times then it warmed up and stopped happening. I bought my truck in March. So far this year it hasn’t happened. There are threads all over different forums on this topic.

HI all - this is the exact noise im getting. My conditions occur intermittently on the highway speeds (50-55+ up to 75mph) I am getting in 8th (minor), 9th (somewhat), 10th (frequent). I get it when I am gradually increasing throttle at inclines. Sounds like this. I will say, that i only get this when the truck REMAINS IN GEAR. I don't know if that has to do with transmission, or the frequency of the vibrations throughout the vehicle, but when it remains in gear the revs are low, when it downshifts to 9th or 8th the revs will kick up. Any suggestions? 2022 XLT Powerboost 29,000 miles. I can't say if it always did this as I only got the truck a few months ago.

Threads everywhere. I haven’t gotten yet this year either. But it has been ridiculously warm in Idaho so far this winter. I’m not sure it has been cold enough.

There is a TSB for it though. I don’t have the TSB number handy at this moment.

So more related to cold weather? Would that make it an electronic thing

I’m not sure if it is only cold weather but it seems to be much more common.

I’d have to dig again but I think it has something to do with the IWE not fully disengaging. Some were theorizing maybe the grease thickens up in the cold.

But I think the TSB requires replacing the mechanism so….

TSB is 24-2189
