You guys are all helping me towards the fact that they are either not stock, or were modified. Seems odd as the original owner was a Canadian municipality. Fortunately it is only a cosmetic issue. But, it is what it is.

If/when the refinish is on my nickel, what is the consensus thoughts on paint versus powder coat?

Thanks again for all the insight,

Greg

Powder coat is a more durable finish that paint, although it is more $$.

Who is to say that the tires and rims were not swapped out just before the truck was traded in.

Maybe they hit it with something?

I've only had wheel coating fail when a caliper decided to puke brake fluid on my wheel and driveway in middle of winter. Fun project when it was 10 degrees outside. ?

Beyond the 3/36 so beyond warranty.
Suspect a chip that allowed corrosion to build under the coating. They will not warranty that at all.

I would try to find some auto paint that matches the wheel as close as possible. Then just paint the spot that is exposed to "blend" it in and roll with it. See if it bothers you or if you do not notice the difference.

This is a cheap way to go for what is probably some knock off wheel. See if you can live with this cheap fix.

If not powdercoat is the way to go but it may cost as much as the wheel. You could put that money toward a new set of wheels you like, and keep these for winter wheels, if that is something you could use. An expensive option but you could get some nice wheels.

In 2021 It cost me $600 to drop my car off on Thursday morning and pick it up Friday afternoon and had all 4 wheels powder coated. Far cheaper than new wheels if you like the design.

For me, I purchased all new wheels from Ford Performance with major discount codes and sold my take offs. I'm into them for $600.

Retired and not looking. I am driving the wife crazy.
Bummer.

Chrome is a problem too. It can peel and ultimately get to a point that it will not hold air. I have experienced that well outside any warranty. Cost me a purchase of older factory aluminum wheel take-offs from the local tire and wheel store. But they worked and still look good.

Ford factory powder coats also seem to hold up well, but I am a relative newby on that. Only owned F150s since 2004 with aluminum factory wheels. Have not experienced any problems.

Raw aluminum is bullet proof on holding air at the rim. Clear coats/powder coatings could change that, which is what most factory aluminum wheels have.

Watching the dealer's reaction will be interesting. I would not warranty it since it could turn into a rabbit hole. If one is bad there may be other problems at some point.

You might figure out who made those wheels and give them a call. They are unlikely to have a warranty to you but they might refinish them.

Powder coats are highly dependent on prep. Choose your vendor carefully if you choose to go that way. Lots of good old boys around.

Quick update. Got a call from the dealer. They did nor laugh out loud, but clearly said NO, NOT COVERED.

I did find a local guy who can powder coat them, including removal, stripping, coating, balancing and reinstallation for $600. That's that way I'll be going. Probably go with gloss black again, but not sure yet.

Thanks for all the great insight!
