I do mine. I hate the yellow drain plug so I invested in a quality Ronin oil drain plug to control the flow coming out so its not as messy.

Mine is now out of warranty, I’ll start doing my own chnages. I can fit my suv in the garage so change the oil on flat surface but the truck is too big, so will do it on slightly sloped driveway. Is it better to drain with truck facing up or down the slope?

Up, plug is on the back of the pan.

I would hazard a guess (purely a WAG, not even a SWAG) that at least 50% of forum members here change their own oil/filter. Maybe a much higher percentage. Different reasons for why that is. I'm old and decrepit and large/tall, would love for my local dealer to do this work for the $80 or more they'll charge, but over the last number of years I've not had good success with dealer fluid changes (with both my previous F150 and current Silverado), not enough drain time leading to over-filling with the new oil. It's conflicting priorities - dealers/oil change joints want to minimize the time spent on the lift rack whereas many engines really should have drain times greater than 15 minutes.

So reluctantly I continue to do my oil/filter changes. For me a big benefit of doing your own changes is it's a good habit/practice every so often to have a close-up look at the underside of engine/trans area for spotting potential leak issues, general under-carriage conditions.

Anyone have a line on one of those oil funnels that fit in place of the fill cap that fits a 24 5.0?
I found mine at Tractor Supply. It stands up straight on its own and is easy to fill from a five-quart jug. The funnel holds almost a gallon. It makes it easy to put in almost eight quarts without spilling a drop. Giant QuickFill Funnel by FloTool.

That's the one. It's perfect for the 5.0.
Well, for $10 that seems way more my speed than some of these $40 ones people have been posting.

I'd love to see a picture of how you get those funnels to stay in the oil fill on the 5.0L that comes out of the valve cover at a what must be a 30-40 degree angle.

Good thread. I change my own. Just did my first one on my 25 FX4 5.0. Pulled the skid plate to avoid a mess but those clips don’t look like they will last long being pulled every 5k miles. Will be looking into valve tube options. Please comment if you have a good system going. The filter drains into a channel I guess (my first Ford) that might line up with a cutout in the skid plate. Had it off so I don’t know. Been using Castrol full synthetic and K&N filters for many years so I stuck with that.

How is this? Look Mom, no hands. It stays put and I can use two hands to manage the five-quart jug of oil. Before my first oil change in this truck, I looked for a funnel that would work because I knew that I would never be able to hit the hole in the valve cover with a five-quart jug. With this funnel, I have never spilled a drop. Something is wrong with you if you can't hit a hole that size.

I don't like the placement of the oil filter on the 5.0, so I relocated mine to make it easier to access and so that I could orient it vertically. I used parts from Improved Racing and -10AN oil lines to relocate the filter. I had a shoulder replacement done a couple of years ago and the filter placement and the oil running down frame members finally got to me, so I fixed the problem. You might think about solving your skid plate issues the same way.

I did a relocation. I used -8 wire mesh covered lines. Worth considering using the wire mesh covered lines. Had a non-wire covered oil line give way on me some years ago. What a mess.

That is a good point, I should have mentioned it. On oil lines always use stainless mesh covered lines and always have them covered for abrasion resistance. The vibration between two braided stainless lines will make holes in a hurry.
