Have done mine since the first oil change, which was done at dealership for free. FL500S and 5w30 Pennzoil Platinum Plus. Put a Fumoto valve on after dealer oil change and added a tube from the oil filter drain pan back side so I don't have to pull off the skid plate each time. Invested in the Motivx filter cap to make life easy and a fitted oil filler funnel that matches the thread on the oil cap. Very therapeutic and like others have said its a nice way to reconnect with your truck.

I have changed oil since I was 16. Haven't ever had a dealer do it once. My 24 was bought used, dealer said they changed it. Drove it home, it got an oil change the next morning in the driveway.

I also found that Tractor Supply Company usually takes used oil and transmission fluids. They heat in the winter with it. Just call or ask the front desk for details.

5 quart jug of Motorcraft 5W-20- $35.99
1 quart 5W-20- $7.99 (x2)
Oil filter- $14.99 (for lowest quality filter available)

Total cost if I do it- $66.96 + taxes

Cost at the dealership- $55.76 (last time I did it)

This is the first vehicle of mine I've paid someone to change the oil. I don't mind doing it, but the dealership does it for less than I can afford to buy the materials.
Your dealer isn't putting motorcraft oil in for oil changes unless you bring it in.

I don't do oil changes for the cost savings because it is true that it will often cost more depending on brands and sale prices.

I always do my own for a number of reasons, cost not necessarily one of them. By the time I buy oil (even on sale) and filter it might only end up being $10-20 cheaper than getting the dealer to do it.
But I like doing basic maintenance myself, as others have mentioned in this thread it’s almost therapeutic and gives you a sense of satisfaction. Plus I can do it whenever is convenient for me, ie on weekends or the evenings when my dealer wouldn’t be open anyway. Save the receipts, write date and mileage on them and they can’t deny you warranty claim for failing to service the vehicle, especially since I do oil changes every 8,000km, not the 16,000+ recommended in the owners manual. Disposing used oil is easy, I just drop it off in the original bottles at a local bottle depot. Don’t even have to deal with anybody there, just walk in and leave it on a cart they have for chemicals.
Same reason for me. I probably don't save all that much doing it myself, but having someone else do it is inconvenient. If I have time at 8 PM on a Saturday, I can just pull it into the garage and do it.

I do 5,000-7,000 mile changes with full synthetic...lower end in the winter or if I towed a lot on that tank. Higher end in the summer.

I bought a bunch of Pennzoil Ultra Platinum oil and Motorcraft filters when I got the truck, so since I got it my changes have cost me $42.30/ea. Just ran out, though, so that might go up a bit next time.

I enjoy changing my own oil. I know I’m using quality oil and filters. When you get the routine down it does not take long.
I don’t trust these places, one time I took company car to jiffy and they filled my washer reservoir with oil.

Only thing I dislike about doing my own oil changes is taking the oil to autozone for disposal
I have a guy that has one of those oil burning shop heaters. All I do is send a message or call him and let him know. I got some oil. He comes by and picks it up. Every 10 gallons or so he drops off 12 pack of Coronas

Have done my own for years. Just feel better doing it myself. Once they let the oil fill cap off at dealer. That was it. I used to do it all myself as a kid and I’m back to it. When oil goes on sale I pick up my go to M1 with a Motorcraft filter and change it out. I figure with what I save over dealer I can do it twice as often.

You are 100% correct. Most of the dealers near me have deals with Exxon (Mobil 1), Shell (Pennzoil) or BP (Castrol) and buy bulk containers. I have never seen the 3 ford dealers service center near me with any Motorcraft oil. Only seen it at Wally World ;)

That, to this very day of my life is the dumbest phrase I have ever read. I can imagine the chaos when you needed you wipers and washer fluid, it's a miracle you weren't killed or kill someone else the way your windshield must of looked. I'm not a violent person, if someone did that to me I would seek them out and beat the shit out of them

I had a friend who worked for a dealership for a while. The techs loved it when customers brought in their own full synthetic oil. The techs would keep the synthetic for their own vehicles and use the shop 55 gallon drum of generic conventional oil for the customer's oil change. Pretty much impossible to know what oil was really used unless they let you into the service area to watch which is rare.

Since 0 miles. I have always used Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 in this truck because I read somewhere the Ultra Platinum does not meet Ford specifications but the regular Platinum does.

Nice they must have updated it, I won’t switch at this point as I’m at 48k miles with the Platinum additive package, don’t want to switch up what works!
