Hey guys,

First time poster here on the forums. I recently purchased a used 2022 F150 Tremor 3.5, overall love the truck and have already changed some stuff in Forscan,(thanks to the many threads), and completed the infamous adaptive tables reset. The transmission seems better overall but still acts strange at times and I still get the occasional harsh downshift and 3rd gear shift, but not all the time. My question is how long does it usually take to fully relearn after a reset? I know it's been asked before but a lot of the threads I see are 2-3 years old. I figured someone may know a little more now then they did a few years ago. I may have 500-600 miles so far after the reset.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Remove you vin from the public forum and message rugedraw on this forum. He can look your truck up and see what pending updates are available,

You can also use Forscan and disable adaptive learning. I did that a year ago on mine. Mine still gets confused at times with downshifts and a shudder but this seems to be a lot less frequent. I make it a point to romp on it every time I drive it. A mech told me do that years ago and I can’t seem to change..

I have seen others talk a lot about disabling. Does it really do anything in terms of transmission life? I want the truck to last a long time, but at the same time I want it to shift smoothly. I just dislike how sometimes the trans shifts buttery smooth up and down from one stop light, to the next feeling as if I'm sitting on a vibrator chair with the pulses from the truck shifting up and down. I know the adaptive learning is supposed to "smooth" out the rough edges, that's why I was wondering if it could still be learning. I'm figuring the truck is constantly learning at different speeds, rpm, throttle, brake, etc to fine tune the shift pattern. Seems like that would take a good bit of time to adjust and fill the tables.

Got home from work and decided to turn off the adaptive learning, on initial test drive the truck seemed more predictable, acceleration was about the same in terms of firmness, downshift were about the same as well, you can still feel a slight pulse each time the truck downshifts. I will run with the learning off for a couple days and see how it does in different conditions. How do downshifts feel for you guys? My gripe is that on occasion I can feel my head bobbing each time the truck downshifts, maybe I'm being picky but I hear from a lot of people about how their shifts are buttery smooth.

Mine seems to perform better with AL disabled than it did enabled and I’ve been running that way for almost a year now. I’m not claiming it still doesn’t have hiccups at times but they seem less severe and less frequent with AL turned off. My next remedy attempt will be a trans flush which Im researching now and this seems to smooth out these issues for many of these trucks.

I had the pan dropped and filter changed about 700 miles ago. Have you had any TCM updates performed on your truck? I know some were saying that helped a lot, especially on the power boost trucks. I know the 10r80 is different in those trucks, but it makes me wonder how many updates the truck may be behind on.

The TCM TCU is the truck's modem. The transmission is controlled by the PCM (the engine computer). That might clear up some confusion when trying to read about the "TCx".

Thanks for the correction. I am still trying to learn all the lingo for the different computers and modules. :)

That could lead to quite a bit of head scratching reading up on the 14th gen's TCM TCU wondering how in the hell it controls the trans :ROFLMAO:

Just for accuracy and not having a go, but you're referring to the TCU ?. As you say though, we have no TCM. ?

I'm buttery smooth here. The only time I get a hard (really hard) downshift is when the trans is still cold and I come to a T-intersection and forget to come up nice and gradually. I never beat on the 10R80 until it reaches at least 80 ° C.

When I wasn't happy with shifting, I disabled (called "stop use of") adaptive learning for a week, then cleared and resumed adaptive learning. It's been brilliant ever since.

Others (@Snakebitten being one if I remember correctly) have had success with clearing the tables and driving in sport mode for a week or two which forces the trans to use every gear.

If these methods still result in bad behaviour for you, it's time to look at service / repair / replacement.

Yea I read about him doing that. I have a feeling the adaptive tables being off is what is messing mine up. I know when I first reset the tables and completed the initial learning drive per the shop manual everything seemed to be pretty smooth, then over time it just started to get out of wack. Maybe I'll give it a few days like you mentioned and then clear the tables again and try the relearn a second time. It wouldn't surprise me if one ill timed stop light or harsh breaking event could mess something up. I still would like to find out If the PCM needs updates though. I messaged Rugedraw like FI300 suggested. Honestly I am hoping there is an update, that would give me hope that maybe with updating that and relearning the tables I could get the "buttery smooth" so many describe. Or like you said, if not it might be a dealer visit, good thing I got the extended warranty. :)

Some people swear by resetting the adaptive tables and then using sport mode and driving like a bat out of hell during the learning period. I believe @Snakebitten has done this. My truck isn't following factory parameters so I can't really speak on this method.
