Any recommendations for a tool?

Really depends on how much you will use one. I have one that doesn’t need an air compressor. It has a hand pump that creates the vacuum.

Check your manual, I recall it calls for 75w-85 Hypoid gear lube. Around two quarts each axle.

The transfer case takes LV transmission fluid. This is different than the ULV needed for the transmission. The diffs take 75/85 gear oil. Stick with motorcraft.

If you're going to change the filter... there is some component lifting needed to clear the pan. Look up the procedure, I've not done it. Also the level check procedure is awkward: requires transmission at temperature, engine running, and the dipstick is difficult to get to (you'll probably need some hot gloves since the exhaust pipe is very close). Do some youtube homework before you try. Also ensure you know which marks on the dipstick apply to your transmission.

Be SURE you understand the procedure before attempting this. If you screw it’s up, bad shot happens

Wait until 30K then pay to have the pan dropped and filter replaced. The original filter has probably caught most of the big stuff already. After that just extract what you can from the pan and replace with new every two years or 30k. That will replace about 1/2 of the fluid each time which is probably close to what a pan drop and filter replacement will get.

If yours is a PowerBoost, be aware that the filter and gasket are different that the standard 10R-80 filter. Also I have heard it said that when the engine is shutdown and the transmission cold, as you remove the filler plug/dipstick oil will flow out (eg the shutdown/cold pan level is above the fill plug level). So be ready for that. I've also heard it said that loosening the filler plug can be quite difficult. My thinking says go get a crows foot. With this you can use a socket wrench extension straight up to the filler plug.

I can confirm from personal experience this will not happen. Loosening the plug is a bitch the first time, no doubt about that. I had to replace mine as I rounded off the plug a bit.

You can reduce the chance of rounding off the plug with a flare nut style wrench or, as I mention above, a crows foot type flare nut adapter.

No, that doesn’t work well either. You want a flex head ratchet and a 6 point socket. And that’s not that tight.

That is a sweet rachet. It’s perfect and beats a crows foot I have used.
