some of you folks tend to forget that Toyota has been specializing in Hybrid technology for a while now..
Yes but a prius is ugly
Even fusion hybrid was not what I would call eyecatching

I don't think anyone has forgotten that at all. They just dropped the ball with their current implementation of it. For long time they were leading the way believing more future in hybrid than full electric. This is correct way of thinking for a country as large as ours. Police departments have been buying up Ford hybrid police interceptors for the hours of idle time without running ICE.
because hybrid is a lot more practical than EV’s so their way of thinking was common sense.

And exactly why their Hybrid should have bloodied The Powerboost nose. I would have been thrilled with that Toyota Hybrid Prowess. Fully expected it too.

Still can't figure out why they didn't take their well earned territory from Ford.

Exactly, Toyota should have schooled Ford delivering a great hybrid option. Not a wimpy second class showing.

Institutional inertia; the same mantra that propelled the Prius to success as a milquetoast grocery getter shitbox doesn’t appeal to most truck buyers and to add injury to insult; the technology doesn’t scale up the way it's currently engineered. Unless you can include some added value and excitement to a hybrid truck, it’s going to both be a visceral disappointment as well as a loser when you do the math.

Ford considered their customers when designing the Powerboost, while Toyota just wrote it in with the Tundra.

Unfortunately, while Ford has included the PB option at a discount; they dropped the XL model while it requires 4x4 for a $4,000 hit, which is ridiculous. I was considering getting an XL Powerboost with front and rear bench seats and RWD as a second truck but now I’ll need to wait and see if it returns as people try to save money. I also can’t justify buying a Supercrew unless I can sit six people in it and the front console makes that difficult on the higher trims. Not to mention that it’s no longer a cheap truck when you get to XLT and Lariat in 2024.

I don't know why they stopped offering it. It's been a great tool for the company, and led to me trying one out for personal use.

I was surprised they offered it on low trims at all.
Had to be losing money on it at that price.

Or it helped with the volume to keep the price for the upgrade less. Either way, that would be a killer utility/work truck.

I agree, my payload is laughable, but I bought a truck for my use case. Light duty winter ride to work and weekend trips to hardware store.

Andre from TFL Trucks kinda made the XL PB famous. Sad it’s gone so soon.

That's one reason I'm a fan of the console -- Driver has dedicated cockpit that can't be intruded upon, plus room for 1 VIP. The rear seat can hold 4 with about the same space smaller sedans can seat 3. I can see why dealers wouldn't order bench crew cabs, but it should still be available for special order.

I recall watching an interview with the Tundra's Chief Engineer and he talked about how they did polling of the Tundra userbase and they said they didn't think an onboard generator like propower was what was going to push the needle for them. They chose reliability over all else. And to be fair, the hybrid models are not being recalled. I actually think Toyota designed the chassis with hybrid in mind as the "primary" option, and the non-hybrid as the "budget" option.

I also recall thinking how short sighted that was. They shouldn't have polled their Tundra diehards, they should have polled people who buy Ford/GM/RAM. It's clear Ford knew that onboard generator tech was a truck mover. And I mean, that's one of the main reasons I bought mine. No regrets, I love the feature. Everyone I know who has purchased a Powerboost love bragging that wherever they go, they bring portable power. The lights going off for them is like a Bat-signal. Toyota could have had that and they dropped the ball. I bet we see that feature come to the Tundra in a refresh or something since the Tacoma now has it.

I'm sure there's a poll somewhere out there probably run by nokia about people not seeing the need for a computer in their pocket. Now there's enough pocket computers in circulation to provide one to each of the 8 billion people on the planet. Toyota has been very slow to implement tech and it's that reason that my last toyota was an 08. Despite having at least a dozen or more being owned by the family, only 1 has been purchased since my 08 tundra.

Most consumers when polled say they support 'green' initiatives but when it comes to buying habits, the inverse is shown and they overwhelmingly reject them. In short, polls are mostly useless unless it's more of a feedback mechanism for something they already own. Polls are useless at gauging uptake for new tech. It's only after they experience does it become clear that it's a feature they can't do without. The tundra hybrid is a perfect example as it doesn't nothing of what the PB does and has no tricks up its sleeve to justify its existence to its owners.
