Digging through the 2021 vs 2022 EPA sheets and there are a few differences.

The key one being why did the EPA rating change (specifically on the 4x4) 24/24 2021 vs 23/23 for the 2022.
I have not seen a good answer to this.

After digging through the EPA data the CO2 and SMOG data are different (2022 is higher than 2021). It is the only truck engine model in the 2022 to be different than 2021.

So one of 3 things has to have happened.
  • there are internal differences
  • there are external differences affecting the mpg
  • the initial 2021 testing inputs were wrong/ inflated and the 2022 MY have been corrected
Wonder what the community can dig up

Was 2021 F150 Powerboost now 2022 PB Platinum
I am going to guess its something subtle like tire brand/ tread pattern that's triggering the difference.

A change in smog results could indicate a change in the catalytic converter, which could affect engine operation to make it less efficient. Slightly different programming in the default tuning could affect it as well.

I don't think you'll find out what prompted the change directly from Ford, you'll just have to dig through parts lists and guess at how the part may have effected efficiency.

I had the 2021 and it had the E-IWE front hubs for 4WD and 4A. So in 2WD, similar to every F150 for 20 years, the front wheels would be disconnected to the front axle(s) and front differential.

In my 2022 Powerboost, the IWE is eliminated. There's no vacuum operated IWE or Electric operated IWE. So it appears the front wheels are permanently locked to the front axle(s) and differential.

On previous F150's, if you got tired of having IWE issues, especially out of warranty, you could just unplug the vacuum from the hubs/IWE and effectively have exactly what Ford has done with the 2022. There's a lot of conjecture about how much of a fuel hit you would take but I'm guessing you could round up or round down to 1mpg and not have a controversy.

Is that 100% certainty?

If so that’s the 1mpg.

did the 2wd lose the 1mpg from 21 to 22?

I do not know what the EPA is on the 2WD.
I DO know my 2021 Platinum Powerboost FX4 was 24mpg
My 2022 KingRanch Powerboost 4X4 is 23mpg

My 2022 is the first F150 4wd I have EVER seen without IWE in my life. Of course before Ford created the IWE you had manual locking front hubs.

Wow wtf
Just looked my KR 22 job 1 doesn’t have it either.
Might as well leave it in 4A then

Are you sure that isn’t a hall sensor?

maybe they changed the way they sense wheel speed on 22?

I wouldn't say "you may as well leave it in 4A" because you still aren't connected to the transmission because the transfer case is still in 2WD, thus no torque required to turn the front wheels.

The IWE delete does kind of fit better with Ford's decision to switch to 4A in Sport mode and rain (slippery) mode though. They obviously are encouraging increased usage of 4A compared to any F150 previously equipped with the hardware.

One thing for sure, we shouldn't ever be concerned with IWE warranty or out of warranty repairs.

By the way, the 2022 Tremor still has the IWE. I only know the Powerboost doesn't?

2022 2wd powerboost lost 1 highway mpg vs 2021. City is the same.

I would guess for the 4wd the extra rotational mass/ slight extra drag would be the difference.

I will have to look more into the 2wd but 25 vs 26 highway could be fuel or testing variations

24-24-24 was optimistic to say the least on the 21 4x4 anyway

although maybe the lower mpg compared to my 21 won’t balance out once it’s broken in

24/24/24 is legitimate for the EPA test loop/procedure. But that test is a typical bureaucratic failure at representing reality.

For some folks daily driving its way off. For others it's closer. For some it's probably a decent representation.

Regardless, both my 21 & 22 Powerboost are considerably more fuel efficient than my 2018 3.5 Ecoboost. (which also performed below EPA estimates)

The "Lie-O-Meter" on my current PB is consistently better than my old 2014 EB.

What I noticed the other day is when I set the Garmin GPS, it was reading exactly what the speedometer was reading, and what the digital readout was reading.

The old truck's speedometer was generally 2 mph faster that what the same Garmin GPS was reading.

After thinking about it more the iwe isn't the difference maker. It would show a drop on all 4x4 engine models if that were they case. The Powerboost is the only one that is lower for 2022
