Hi all. I finally bought an F150 after driving Rangers for 25 years. I got a 23 XLT Screw with the 3.5L. Absolutely love it. I’ve got 1200 miles on it already and was wondering if I should change the oil now? I don’t know if they put break in additives in the oil from the factory. I don’t think I want to wait on that first oil change. What is your opinion?

It is all your preference. Some people do oil changes in the 500-1000 range with the thought that you are getting the assembly lubricants and break in material out. Most modern engines are build pretty clean with better tolerances than earlier engines. If you plan to switch to synthetic oils and do the work yourself now would be the time. If you will be doing dealer service than wait for the reminder on the dash or your Ford Pass.

I just hit 1000 miles on my ‘23 a couple weeks ago and did my oil change. I used Mobil 1 5w30 and the OEM Motorcraft filter. I plan on doing them at 6k intervals going forward.

I did that Combination with that mobil one oil and Motorcraft filter . So on ever oil change i do i will cut the oil filter open to see inside . what i found was the filter Adhesive was coming apart with mobil one oil . I recommend not using .here a pic

I did my first oil change when I got home from the dealer. That was about 1,100 miles. As far as I know there are not any special break in oil additives.

There are lots of opinions about when to change the oil for the first time and every time afterwards. I try to change the first oil at 1,000 miles and then every 3-5,000 miles. I have engines that last for several hundred thousand miles. If you go by the oil life monitor and use synthetic oil, I am sure your truck engine will last at least as long as the warranty. If you want more life out of it then change the oil more often and your engine, turbos, timing chains, cam phasers, etc. will be much happier.

Motorcraft oil filters are crap these days. Go look at all the tears and sloppy glue issues at BITOG. Plus it isn’t the best for filtration either. Get a Fram Enduarnce and call it a day.

Curious did you cut your initial filter open as well when you had factory fill still. If so what were your observations of the filter adhesives etc. Thanks

Rob yes i did open the first filter and Everything looked Intact It has some silicone and breaking metals residue inside the Pleats but The end of the filter adhesive wasn't falling apart .When I use the mobile one with a Motorcraft oil filter That's when I saw the adhesive falling apart.. I don't know if this is a fluke but that's what happened and I will never use the Motorcraft filter with fully synthetic motor oil

thank you Rob

This is my take on the subject
On an engine I had rebuilt, I will go up to 1000 miles before the first change. Has worked well for me since I was a teen.
(That first 500 miles is usually “drive it like it’s stolen”)
Always went with 4-5000 changes after as most were freeway commuting without a lot of stop-n-go.

new cars over the years ( 3 of them this millennium)
2500 first, 5000 second and every 5000 after.
Still hiway unencumbered driving

could care less as to what is in the filter—if in the filter, not going thru the engine.

I’ve not had any oil usage issues in any of them
Oil still has color other than black at oil changes
Engines get a full and complete warmup at every cycle.
(10 miles just for coffee and gas)

ElCamino and Ranchero, maybe every other year as these two seldom go thru 4 tanks of fuel in a year and virtually every cycle is a road trip to another county
