Kinda dumb that this electric motorized folding shifter is always included, but it's like $1000 to get a hinge and extra plastic bits for the "work surface". There is no logical reason for this, only marketing reasons to upsell a package. They should include the folding lever only with the work surface package, OR always include the folding console... which is, of course, what they should have done. Console lid is very thick and a complete waste of space without the fold option.
Agreed about the wasted space. I wish there were aftermarket options, I know I would use that volume. The truck has TONS of storage but I can always use more, lol!

Someone swapped a work surface between trucks a few years ago - it DID looks like a huge PITA.

Not what this video shows. The pic above is from a you-tube video concerning a 2021 F150. My 2024 Key Fob goes in the same place - cup holder.
Well, I'll be damned. I literally saw this the other day and assumed it was for the key fob if the battery died. Ya learn something new every day. Thanks!

Incorrect. You don't work in engineering or manufacturing, do you? There is a logical reason: It would actually cost MORE to have DIFFERENT shifter solutions depending upon whether or not you had the optional work surface than to just use the same shifter for every truck. Complexity adds cost, going all the way back to design and engineering to testing to assembly and to servicing. This is common across many of the components and systems used in your truck.

Haha - Actually yes... Mechanical Engineer, machine design, custom factory automation for 20+ years. I agree with your sentiment about everything having a reason. But I guess I don't include all reasons as logical.

If you are going to argue the complexity thing then why do these trucks have so many options? Why not give all the trucks the extra $10 worth of plastic console parts if you are going to include the $100 or whatever it costs to add the motor, switch, sensors, bushings, latches, interlocks, software, etc for a folding shifter? It would definitely save complexity by not having console variants.

When I bought my Hondas I chose between 3 versions available, plus colour. I'm fascinated that the F150 alone is available in 3 box lengths, 3 cabin sizes, 4x4 and 2x4, 6 trim levels, 5 engine choices, and a pile of individual options on top of that.

Does the shifter stow away only while in park or once in gear, can the shifter be stowed so the passenger can unfold the console cover to use as lap top table (or throw out a gingham cover to begin a 5 course picnic lunch on the move)?

The shifter can't be stowed unless it's in park.

Honestly it wouldn't really do much for current packages. The work surface is part of the 'mobile office pack' and it also includes the 400w inverter as well as the under seat storage. The build is known before it starts production and with JITM, all of the parts arrive to the vehicle as they should.

The one issue is with the simplification of the harnesses and upper trims. With no lariat plus coming with anything other than consoles, they probably don't have the proper dash harness offering now. Going from 2000 configurations of harnesses down to 20 is a hard limit for some options.

Not wanting to leave out one of the most important functions of the folding shifter I offer this (hypothetical??) scene:

Drove to quiet place with the wife or girlfriend, barely got the truck into park before she slid over the center console, flipping the shifter out of the way like it was the last obstacle between her and victory. Windows fogged up, and somewhere in the cup holder, a lonely gas station coffee sloshed in silent admiration.

I know this is for the shifter when it folds down.....my truck doesnt have the work surface so it's never folded down

I use it for my knife and it will fit a large Chick-Fil-A fry but what is its main purpose??

Yep
When my 2021 was drinking oil because of the valve cover baffle, I stored a qt of oil there. I sent the Ford guys a pic and told them I figured out what the hole is for....they didn't seem impressed.
