There's plenty of literature on this, you do get a thicker frame, larger front anti roll bar, bigger rear brakes, heavier springs and 3/4 float axle rated for higher GAWR than standard F150. Powerboost comes with most of those items but always a smaller payload sticker than say a 3.5 or 5.0 max tow.

Trying to decide on max tow?

It's a no brainer if you need the maximun towing capability out of an F150. The usable service life out of this will be higher when being pused near its capacity than a standard F150.

They make it and sell it for a reason, those who naysay are likely don't need or want maximum capability for towing on a F150.

I have the max tow package on my little diesel truck and it has the heavier springs and axle that liked breaking bolts until they replaced it with the new style. After driving a lot of F-150 service loaners while my truck was always being worked on, I have come to hate how rough my truck rides with this package compared to the regular trucks.

I have a '21 PB Lariat W/Max Tow (also FX4). I used to pull a 5000lb camping trailer, and It's tongue weight was typically 550lbs. By the time I had all my camping gear and passengers loaded into the truck, I hit 90% of the payload limit, which is OK, but not ideal.

The rig towed like a dream; usually averaging 14MPG and driving up & down the mountains @ 60 mph no problemo (even on a 10% grade).

Really didn't need to add the FX4 package, as I've only taken it off road about 3 times. We don't own that camper anymore, but I still have the truck. I haven't had any broken axle bolts, but I'll have the recall service performed anyway.

In summary - I'd get a Max Tow equipped F-150, just not the FX4, if I were buying a new one.

I'm speccing out a 2026. I'm not looking to maximize payload as it will be a daily driver and only occasional towing of a car hauler and car should I decide to go to a Mustang show out of town.
I would not get the max tow. I don’t think you would need it. I would highly advise to make sure you get the towing package with the electric electric brake tow controller. Should you decide to tow a trailer with electric brakes in the future that is a major pain in the ass to get it added

I appreciate that input and am now leaning that way. I plan to lower the truck too if that makes any difference.

You'll get the towing capacity of the various builds (engine, rear end, bed size, cab type, (tow package and which)4wd etc.) in the tow guide.

But that is just where you start. Those are all for XLs only. Every trim level up from there and every option, adds weight, subtracting from payload.

Ford defines payload, as GVWR-Curb weight.

The more stuff in or on the truck, factory ordered or not, adds to curb weight and subtracts from payload.

You need enough payload to carry the tongue weight of the trailer(10-15% of trailer weight), WDH (since you'll be over 5Klbs.) you, passengers, gear, mods etc. That is where most people bump their heads, not towing capacity, from the tow guide. 2 different but related things.
Ah ok, so if I do want to get a car hauler I need to make sure it's CG is placed to not to exceed the tongue weight and payload of the entire truck, people, and gear. Understood, thanks!

No that is only the HDPP.
Powerboost is standard with the bigger frame, 9.75” axle housing & three leaf springs.

Essentially the only thing the Max Tow package adds to the Powerboost is the larger brakes & axle shafts with the larger bearing design

you won’t have any issues with a car hauler and a Mustang

I've towed my Mustang on a u-haul car trailer a couple times now and it's been perfectly fine. My truck is a PB with just the regular towing package that adds the trailer brake controller.

Not sure what hauler you are using but the u-haul setup ends up weighing just under 6k lbs. On my '24 PowerBoost the Max tow option only adds 400lbs to the max towing capacity (11.2k vs 10.8k) so it wasn't worth it considering I will probably never tow that much as well as the possible headache involving the current recall on those axles.

So a 3.73 e-lock with the standard tow/haul package would be just fine. Thanks!
In my opinion, hell yes. I’ve told the FJ cruiser on a U-Haul auto transport, I also towed our 72 MGB. Neither was an issue at all, towed wonderfully.

I appreciate everyone’s input. I know it can be a pain to answer what many would consider “basic dumbass questions”. Thanks again!
