FYI, two layers of aluminum foil wrapped around a key fob does the same thing as a faraday bag. You can try it by wrapping the fob and putting it on the console then exit and lock the truck with the door button, keypad or first fob. The truck doesn't see the second fob and locks normally. When I travel I always put the second key wrapped in foil in my luggage.

The Keypad is not affected by the key fob left in the cab, even when exposed. I lock the truck with keypad and fob inside many times.

I bolted a lockbox under the truck with the factory spare door only key (the small one without a fob) and have it and a few other spares under the truck. I only take my one fob with me.

When traveling I usually have it clipped to my belt loop. If going somewhere like a miles long bike trip or on a boat I leave the fob in the truck and lock it via keypad. Impossible to loose it then. If my battery died the door keys under the truck to get me in.

Makes sense, lots of people lock their keys in the truck when hiking etc. using the keypad.
I normally lock with the fob or button on the handle and I'm pretty sure if you do that with an unwrapped key fob in the truck it will tell you or refuse to lock.

Wondering how many ppl take both set of truck keys when road traveling?
You should. I don't always remember to, but I try. Without a FOB you're stranded.

OK, this has got me looking at getting an aftermarket 3rd fob. However, when I look at all the different offers out there, they all say " MUST be Programmed by a Professional Automotive Locksmith ". I have a '24 King Ranch and the fobs I've looked at are for 24-25 F150s and appear to be different from earlier model F150s. I wonder what is unique about 24-25 model years that you can no longer self program these aftermarket fobs following the programming instructions in the owner's manual if you have the two original fobs in your possession?

Good old Ford trying to hold you captive to their parts and prices. I did see a YouTube video where the guy said Ford is bringing back the keypad on the door for '26 F150s. Never should have been deleted. I also called one of the outfits that was supposedly selling OEM fobs, and he said the 3rd fob had to be programmed by a locksmith or dealer. Ford wants your money. Why have programming instructions in the owner's manual if you can't program your own fob?

Wondering how many ppl take both set of truck keys when road traveling? Coming up for a 10 day road trip thru smokey mountains then west Tn., then back home to Southern FL.
Your thoughts pro/con on taking both sets of keys.
Thanks
Never lost a key in my life, but always take both sets of keys on a trip.

I leave the 2nd fob in my truck at all times in a console safe. I removed the battery from the FOB so the truck will not recognize it. If I loose the FOB while I'm out and about, I'll open the truck with the door pad, open the safe, retrieve the FOB and drop it in the dead battery slot under the cup holder and away I go. If you don't have a safe, you can hide it somewhere clever inside the cab. Be sure to remove the battery and and test the "dead" FOB before hiding it for peace of mind that it will work as intended.

Just make sure you get the little faraday bag so the truck doesn't pick up the fob near the truck.
Also take the battery out. I have a second key hidden since I got the truck and a year later I needed to use it, but the battery was dead (still works if you put it in the slot under the cup holder with a dead battery). So now I have a battery on subscribe and save, once a year I put that new battery in my daily key, and the year old battery goes with the backup key. Ziploc baggie, aluminum foil, zip tie.

I like this idea. Even if the dead fob slot doesn't work, a battery to put in your key fob is a whole lot easier to source than a new programmed fob.

This is a good reminder that fob batteries can go bad in 2-3 years whether being used or not. Also your trick to save money and not waste batteries reminds me of someone I know who takes frugality to the extreme by only purchasing one wiper blade a year for the driver side while last year's new blade gets moved to the passenger side.
