Hm, I found the 2.7l lack luster compared to my 5.0l. My 5.0l is no slouch but I am running premium fuel in it too, it will run on regular but just like the eco-boost engines not as well. 12:1 compression on the 5.0l. Regularly get 20-21 mpg with mixed driving 50/50. Blows my old 4.0l tacoma away the best it would do mixed was all 17mpg with 236hp.
First time I ever put 87 in my 5.0 this week and it was accidental. Card reader didn’t work at the pump and attendant set it to 87. Have run premium since day 1 to now with 24,000 miles. This engine is NOT happy on 87 octane and the loss of power in low revs is very noticeable, especially with the 90+ degree days we are having in Buffalo right now. I can tell it’s retarding the timing like crazy because my truck has never felt so lazy. It almost feels like it heat soaks on 87 octane because as it warms up the power is just gone in the low revs. Next tank is back to premium.

Yes, 12:1 compression and 87 octane do not go together. It’ll run it, but it runs like shit. 89 is Ok, 91+ preferable.

Huh. I've only run 87 in mine. Now you're piquing my curiosity to buy some of that bougie 93. I might have to start carrying some Grey Poupon in the glove box too.

Doesn't the 2.7 make like 80% of it's torque rating at like 1900 rpms?

I've always felt like they were very peppy right out of the hole. That's what is so deceiving about them. If you don't tell someone what is under the hood and you let them test drive it, they would never guess correctly.

Here are 5-Stars baselines for the 5.0L (at the wheel). Blue is stock on premium and purple is stock 87. The 5.0 makes 30 lb ft more grunt on 93 in certain parts of the rev range. At 12:1 premium is required if you want full torque and power, GM can’t even run 87 in their slightly lower but still high compression 6.2 (11.5:1). The 5.0 is adorned with some extra technology that can bleed off cylinders pressures to tolerate lower octane, but it costs power. Per F-150 owners manual, 91 or higher octane for best performance on the V8.

I have the 5.0 in my 21. When I step on it, it goes, and sounds great. I can still manage 24mpg on the highway too if I really try.

21,500 miles on my 5.0 and its never had anything in it but premium. And some stations in Ohio have 91 octane premium, I ovoid those and head to the 93 pumps at all the mainstream stations. For a while Marathon was 91 but I think that's been remedied. Can't believe the op could not have noticed the 5.0 exhaust tone as he thought he was driving 2.7! He must have idled around town. LOL

If OP didn't rev it out, he won't hear anything. The stock exhaust note is really disappointing, imo.

My 5.0L is "lazy" below certain RPMs and at light throttle when I drive easy. But as noted...STEP ON IT, and listen to it. These are not typical old-skool V8s producing torque at low RPMs. They like to (and need to) rev.

But in all honesty, you cannot compare a normally aspirated V8 to a tuned hybrid powertrain. Apples to oranges. I prefer the simplicity of a traditional drivetrain to the nuances and potential issues of the more advanced stuff. But to each his/her/they/zim/zo/whatever own. ;)

This is true. I was pretty much in bumper to bumper traffic the entire way home. I did hear some noise, but assumed it was the piped in engine sound from the stereo.

Anyway, I drove a bit this morning and have changed my opinion somewhat. It definitely likes to rev, and gets increasingly angrier sounding as it does. It's super responsive and smooth at any RPM as well.

Power is good, but again, not what I'm used to and not delivered in the way that I'm used to. Light throttle in my PB will put you back in the seat, where in the 5.0 you have to commit to it a bit more. If I owned one, I would definitely be putting a Whipple on it though - that would be fun. ?

Never had anything other than 87 in my 21` 5.0. If I needed more HP and had a desire to race someone, I'd probably buy a Mustang, or a Porche. I bet it's an age gap.

Indeed. It's a great engine, probably better than the 3.5 in some respects.
It costs less primarily.
Edit: Higher reliability? Has that been decided or does Ford keep improving the 3.5 making it difficult to know for sure?

I've never backed to backed them. But the 3.73 gear in the 5.0 package is bound to be crisper at off idle to the mid RPM's. Exactly where your analyzing laziness. Thats why I ordered the 3.73. The standard gear is a 3.31 and that's quite a difference. I'm betting you're in a 3.31

Ah! The 3.73 is where it's at with the 5.0L, from what I've heard. I spec'd mine out that way based on that opinion. That 3.31 is a lazy rear, for sure.

While travelling for work I got upgraded at the car rental facility to a 2022 5.0 F-150, and on the lower end I definitely found myself missing my PB. I realized the electric motor does a lot more work than I give it credit for.

That said on the open road, slamming my foot down really woke up that Coyote and showed me its true form. I can totally see the appeal. I still ended up preferring my PB but I can absolutely see why someone would choose the coyote over the PB, and I would not be mad if I ever had to swap trucks.

Also worth noting that the 5.0 is noticeably lighter. The PB def feels like driving an overpowered pontoon boat in comparison to the 5.0.
