so do some research on this
I pretty much figured out the transmission problem by 23. Assuming you didn’t buy a 21 or a 22 should be good very few transmission problems out of 24 models

Thanks, I have the 2025, XL, RCSB. 4x4 on order. I'm rolling the dice and see what happens.

Well,.. around $5k of parts in the garage.
I'm having buyers remorse and I don't even have the truck yet. Has anyone got 200K miles out a 10R80 ??
My transmission destroyed itself around 45,000 miles and the new one seems to be coming apart already with only a couple thousand miles and back at the dealership.

Just curious, was the second transmission exhibiting any issues prior to this catastrophic failure? I hope they get your truck back in service quickly.
It had been shifting harshly, holding gears weirdly long sometimes, hunting for gears a little too often - but I figured that is just what you get with a ford nowadays.

I love the truck, but man…not digging this at all.

What's sad is I feel we are all just waiting our turn to go through this. I dont tow frequently, but when I do its a 7,000lb boat so excited to see how long I can go before the CDF drum destroys itself.

I know people will say there are a lot of Ford trucks out there with the 10 speed that don't have issues, you only hear from the people that do have problems etc etc. But when the first thing someone says when you say you have a Ford is "oh I know a few people that have had serious transmission issues how is yours doing?" you know its not just internet hearsay.

I personally know three people that have needed transmission work in a 21+ F150 around 60k miles. Ford builds great drivetrain's I do believe that, but the 10 speed is a larger problem than they would like to admit.

While I would never actually buy a dodge I do envy their nice ZF Transmissions. If only there was a way to pick and chose the best parts from the Big Three....a Frankenstein truck if you will.

ZF 8 Speed out of a Dodge
3.5 Eco out of a Ford
I guess a Dodge interior - but Ford is close.
I'd take the air ride suspension from Dodge

Not sure what we need from GM....I am sure there is something....

Either way, Good luck. Enjoy the new transmission under warranty?

Yep,.. you summed up the situation just right. My daughter has gone through the 10 speed tranny issues in her last F-150. She tows a large camper. She's on her 2nd F-150 now. Frankensteining is the way to go. Take the 6 speed standard from my Mustang GT and swap out the 10R80. That would be Slick !
Anyways, my XL, as of yesterday has moved into " Production " stage.
It's sad that it's LUCK if your new transmission will even make it to the end of warranty.

What the Heck !! That's ridiculous. I have XL on order. Scheduled build week 4/28. I'm thinking of cancelling my order. Does anyone have a Good story with the 10R80 ??
My truck only has a little over 12K miles but an honest half of it, has been towing a 7Klb 11'-4" tall, 8' wide travel trailer across the Rockies and back and I'm about to add 4- 5K more to that.

I was surprised and pleased, at how well the trans worked as engine braking in the mountains. I messed around with manually shifting but found it best to just set the cruise, and let truck do it's job.

I do use tow haul (when towing) and I keep the trans temp gauge on the dash but its never offered any concern, generally tracking engine temps, at least on the non numeric "gauge".

I used to occasionally get the phantom "bump" at stop lights and while hard enough to make you look, was never severe and seems to be gone now.

When not towing, it's life is pretty cushy. I'll stick my foot in it once in a while. I mean, a guy has to let it breathe sometimes but for most part, I'm a boring, gentle driver, who gets a kick out of seeing high MPGs and electric miles on such a vehicle.

It's Great to hear a positive review. I'm assuming that your 10R80 has the latest updates. Good news !!

I've bought six Jeeps, All new. I've run them all for over 200k miles. My current 2015 Rubicon Hardrock has over 210K. Original clutch, trans has never had an issue, original ball joints, axles, u-joints. The list goes on. Incredibly reliable. And I run 35" tires. I'm thinking that going with Ford is a mistake.
You've had remarkable service then. My Wife's 02 Liberty Limited, was not what I'd call reliable and I'm certain she was much easier on it than you, being left completely stock from day one.

One of the selling features at the time, was that it was Rubicon tested and passed.

I will say, I never worried about her getting stuck in bad weather. The drive system had plenty of grip but a broken valve around 30K, 2 sets of front suspension gear, the electric fan exploded itself, causing all kinds of damage, burnt oil, almost from the beginning and the transfer case leaked, almost out of the box. Oh and it got crappy gas mileage.

But she loved it.

When at ~180K miles, she finally became uncomfortable enough with it's reliability and was looking at new, I told her no more Jeep products.

Yes, the service has been remarkable,.. It's ME,.. Haaa. I was a mechanic. I've been an engineer for decades and restore Classic cars for a hobby. Everything is done the right way.

I'm not an expert so correct me if I'm wrong here, but I was always told tranny fluid is the "Goldilocks" of the vehicle. If the fluid is too cold, she'll shift too hard. If she's too hot, she'll break down and it cause gears to slip or total failure. Has to be just right. I also read that people say the GM variant (10L80) hasn't suffered the same fate as the Fords due to sufficient cooling. Not sure how easy it is to cool down the transmission.

I'm not an expert either. But, Two more things that I will be adding to the truck when it arrives are, the PPE cast aluminum trans pan. It has cooling fins and a drain plug. Also, a trans cooler relocation kit. The OEM trans cooler is very close to the catalytic converter causing the trans fluid to run in the 230 degree range. With the relocation kit, in the article that I read, temps were reduced to 175 degree range.

"Too hot" I can understand being an issue, but how can too cold? The truck must start and drive below 0 degees F. Mine does so with no problems just like all my other vehicles always have. I do of course accelerate gently for the first few minutes, but never let it sit idling for more than a minute or so before starting out.

Could be? It was 75F out and I had just started driving when mine apparently failed. Unsure why.

I'm not a transmission engineer, but did holiday inn last night....

Too cold causes the viscosity of the oil to be thicker which can cause issues w/ modern automatic transmissions shifting smoothly. Heat kills them, Cold just can result in hard / odd shifting behavior. At least thats my understanding.

It does have to be difficult to design an ATF that can flow through the small passages in the transmission at 0 degrees and also protect up to 250 degrees.

I agree. Another way to look at it is an unnecessary indirect expensive repair bill that wasn't needed. Observer takes off right away without realizing colder oil causes rough shifts. Observer takes vehicle to service shop. Service shop snake oils them into a trans flush. Service shop DESTROYS the trans or at the very best-worst case scenario changes fluid that doesn't need changing.
