So yesterday, I was hit from behind by a kid tailgating me in the neighborhood. Low speed but caused about $1000 worth of damage per the insurance estimate. I still don't know how he managed to hit the left side with the center of his car while I was turning left. Instead of doing the body shop route, should I just do an aftermarket replacement?

Any good recommendations that don't break the bank?

I agree. If you have comprehensive or uninsured motorist coverage, you can coordinate everything through your insurance company. They will still use the other driver's insurance to pay for everything. That's how I have always handled damage to my cars caused by others.

Since you already have an estimate from insurance the damage is done so to speak and linked to the truck. May as well let insurance cover it unless you want to use this as a reason to go with an aftermarket bumper. If so then it all depends on what you want to go with and if the aftermarket bumper has provisions for the parking sensors.

I guess I wasn’t clear.

Their insurance is paying me for it.

I figured I’d look for an aftermarket steel replacement vs repair.

any good aftermarket replacement that you have personally done?

I doubt they will try to repair the bumper since it's relatively cheap to just replace it. You could go with factory painted dual outlet caps instead and have the exhaust tip reworked from a side outlet to dual rear.

I'm trying to figure out why you wouldn't just let insurance deal with it and get it replaced with an OEM bumper for free. What benefit would you get with an out of pocket aftermarket bumper?

How I read it is the kids insurance is paying him directly and he wants a different style bumper, like a steel offroad type. I would do the same to get the bumper I want instead of OEM. Some of us like to make modifications to our vehicle that are not the same as factory. This gives him an opportunity to do this with less money out of his pocket.

Ok. That makes more sense. I'd sure like a bumper with the corner notch steps like my F-350 had and that Chev/GMC have on their 1/2 tons. My knees aren't getting any younger. lol

I have been looking at Addictive Desert Design. They are pricey but look to be very well made and I like the look. American trucks has brands like Barricade that are cheaper but still have really good reviews. The only thing I would caution is that insurance doesn't dig into whether any of the supports, sensors, or other things will need to be replaced. They always have a clause that a body shop can put in for more money if they find extra things the adjuster did not see. In my experience they always seem to find more things. That being said I had a similar thing happen in the past and I told the body shop the bumper I wanted and when it was all said and done I got the bumper I wanted with way less money out of my pocket.

All the sensors and supports look fine. I was eyeballing the ADD bumpers today at the local shop. They also can get the ranch hand midnight, and steelcraft.

I swung by fords body shop and their estimate was $1600. And on top of that I’ll need a rental for a few days. So insurance would be out $1800 or so if I go that route. I’ll see if I can negotiate something from them that benefits both sides.

I like the look and functions of the rough country bumper. At around $700.

You can find plenty of bumper skin takeoffs on eBay. You might even find one with the proper color paint

Their insurance is paying. I want to see if I can pay the difference and get something else. And in 2024 they went from the 2 single skins to 1 complete skin.
