I have a '22 XLT with just about 15k miles on it. I don't believe its phasers/timing due to my familiarity with the issue (I had a '13 3.5 that had the rattle and I personally did the chain/phasers). On cold start, there is a rattle that sounds a lot like a heat shield. I figured I would check it out when I got under it for my at-home oil change. I didnt see anything out of sorts. After doing a little reading, it seems some people have a rattle at cold start much like I do, and its the wastegates rattling around. I havent had an opportunity to get under the hood to verify, but it doesnt appear to be a super common issue with the 14th gens. I see talks to adding an E-clip to eliminate the rattle, but I certainly dont want to cause any other issues doing so. Its only a concern at cold start and I currently just treat it as a characteristic of the truck rather than a flaw. Has anybody experienced/remedied this?
Did you ever figure out what the noise is?

Oil pressure is in the normal range when the rattle noise on my truck happens. It'll happen 2 to 3 seconds after starting the truck for the day. Subsequent restarts are fine, no noise. Asked the dealer about it and they said: "couldn't reproduce the issue."

To me, the rattle I hear sounds more like an electronic device turning on than a mechanical issue like timing chain or cam phasers. Yesterday the truck got a new APIM (unrelated issue), but I will see if the problem is still present when I start it cold later today.

Here's a video of the rattle I'm experiencing on a cold start. Is it similar to the one you're hearing?

Cold start and the noise appears at the 14 second spot in the video.

My 3.5 does this most every cold start and I'm of the opinion that it is intentional; the truck intends to make that noise a few times.

I didn’t. Doesn’t bother me enough since it goes away. If it gets worse I’ll take another look.

I had something like this on my truck. It only happened when temperatures got down below 15ºF. Turned out to be slightly low transmission fluid from factory fill. Had my dealer look it over and they agreed it was from the transmission. They did a top off and adjusted the level and all was well in the world. :)

The dealer said the noise is normal, so no action was taken. Good news is there hasn't been a CEL or DTC to report yet.

I did, however, confirm the noise is coming from the driver's side wastegate actuator in this case.

I once had a thumping on another car. Turned out to be a defective new strut just installed. Kicked my butt trying to figure it out. Finally bought a set of strap on sound sensors that transmitted to a remote control box. Finding rattles etc can just be daunting... Good that you found it. :)

Okay, I have this exact same noise as my RPM's come down under 1000 on cold engine start. Took to dealership and they replaced a turbo assembly, but I still hear this sound as soon as RPM's start dropping. Then it goes away. What did you find out? Is this a concern or normal operation?

The noise on cold start is a normal engine warm up operation; no cause for concern. My truck is running well and no engine components have been inspected by the dealer or replaced.

I can watch and hear this perfectly as the arm on the turbo assembly for the waste gate moves as my idle comes down. I see it move like 3 times and hear the noise. The dealership replaced my drivers side turbo assembly and that one is quiet now as it moves, but this is coming from my passenger side turbo assembly. At least I know what it is and am not too concerned at this point. Truck operates and drives beautifully.
