In 2.5 years, my 2021 has never used the BISG, so that article is a bit misleading when it says they made it smoother. They just removed an unnecessary part that has been documented here for a few weeks now in other threads.

I don't know how the electric to gas, or gas to electric transition can be any smoother than it already is on my 2022. I often can only tell by looking at the tachometer or oil pressure gauge, that the power source has changed.

Thankfully, my truck also shifts gears really smoothly too. Some of this may be because I drive like the old man that I am.

What's BISG?

Or maybe it's never used the flywheel starter and it isn't detectible whether the flip from gas to electric and back is the HVB or the BISG, but either way, it would be cool if they could update the software on the 21-23s and remove the part since there is a TSB for them failing.

Consider yourself lucky. I often accelerate like an old man in my 2022 and have the exact opposite response from the truck. Rapid acceleration is much smoother, as I'm forcing 2nd gear.

Thanks for the flattering words good sir.
Yeah, I read the article and was disappointed that there was so little proofreading before publishing.

The biggest error that stuck out like a sore thumb:

"The biggest change involves the total elimination of both belt starters."

There is 1 traditional bendix/flywheel starter, and one belt integrated starter (BISG) on the 2021-2023 Powerboost.
Ford did indeed eliminate the ONE belt driven starter on the ICE.

I would really enjoy reading what the engineer actually wrote on LinkedIn, but I don't have any social media accounts and don't plan to.

For those that are curious, this is the gentleman at Ford and his link to the article can be seen without logging in, but can't be read.

Kelly Johnson with Ford Motor Company will locate his LinkedIn profile easy enough.

Thank you so much @RcFlyer330

He scraped the Ford engineers statement and I got to read without joining the dark side. ????

It was shorter than I hoped, and without much detail, but let's just say software, software, software.

In summary, with 3 years of data and testing, the traction motor, which was always 1 of 3 methods for starting the Powerboost ICE, now took over the duties of the BISG. Which we already knew must be the case.

Again, that's further evidence that the BISG on the Powerboost was never a BISG, but a BIS only.

I know it's highly unlikely, but it would be cool if Powerboosts could retroactively get the BISG-defeat code. Not because I want to remove it nearly as much as ridding the truck of what now is just an unnecessary failure point. There's been a couple of fellas that had a faulty BISG and it disabled the truck altogether. I imagine the engine management software onboard can't isolate a failed BISG?

I wish FORD would put that much effort into getting BlueCruise 1.4 OTA working!

I think I have heard the flywheel starter twice in two years. It sounds like a "normal" starter with the solenoid click and very quick "chew-chew-chew" sound.

The BISG start is pretty noticeable by how different it is. If I'm sitting in a parking lot waiting for the better half to finish shopping, you'll feel a very noticeable "torque" where it feels like the engine rocks a couple of degrees on startup. Instead of the "chew-chew" sound, it truly feels like a rubber band being stretched.

My EV-ICE transition is so much smoother now than it every was, I think due to software updates.

I don't recall this truck ever starting not in electric first. And when the ICE finally does kick on, it is smooth, no truck rock.

But maybe the truck shake when idling at a stoplight going from E to ICE (what feels like a tractor trailer shifting side rocking if you've ever driven one) is the BISG, but when in motion it is the HVB system ?

Two belt starters lol.

Hopefully the continued software updates render the BISG a piece of “abandoned in place “ hardware for pre-24 models.
