Your idea does exist but not exactly the way you describe you would like. We own a 2021 ToyotaRav4 Prime (Plugin Hybrid EV) and love it. Especially loved the $7,500 Fed Tax Credit we received off our taxes in April. It is not a pickup truck but gets driven a hell of a lot more than our 2021 Powerboost. 28,000 miles on RAV4 in 10 months vs 8,700 miles Powerboost Hybrid in 15 monhts. We get up to 50 miles of EV driving and then Hybrid engine kicks in. We will buy another as soon as we get about 120K on it. I expect more and more PHEV's will become more popular since driving long distances out of town will require a robust infrastructure of level 3 Charging stations that just don't exist everywhere yet and probably not a for another 4 years.

I would have ordered a PowerBoost if I could have gotten a 36 gallon tank with it. How much range do you guys get when towing? I watched a video of the Lightning only making 100 miles with a 6k trailer hooked up. The plug-in might be good for a daily driver, but not so much if you tow.

Not towing, a Powerboost basically has the same range as an ICE with the 36 gallon tank. (my last tank 689)

Towing, of course, is the equalizer. I suspect the 6 gallons less fuel will not be made up for with economy.

I'm sure you're right on the money. The Powerboost should make up the 6 gallon deficit unloaded but with a trailer I can't see them being any more efficient than a regular Ecoboost which is already well regarded as being extremely thirsty while towing. @ 8mpg with 6 gallons less fuel capacity you'll lose about 50 miles of range. Actually fairly significant..

Snakebitten, How do you get the numerical numbers to show beneath your temp gauge? I don’t have the number reading below my water temp gauge.

I get 10 mpg towing our horse trailer. Current truck is a 2009 Lariat with 5.4 liter. Towing is why I ordered my Platinum with 5.0.

Its a forscan mod.. requires a computer, and the right OBD adapter
Would A lap top work? And what adapter do you need/where can you get it?

I get about 250 miles. Which is fine. I physically can't go as far as a 36 gallon tank can take me. My plumbing isn't what it used to be.

The f150 is big and heavy. To drive EV only it will need a sufficiently powerful electric motor. 150hp would probably be enough. Which wheels would it drive. The Volvo XC90 and xc60 phev drive the rear axle with the electric motor and the front wheels with a transverse inline 4 turbo/super charged engine. The transmission tunnel area contains the battery. Phev f150 could use the same setup if the rear electric motor is powerful enough. Also with a powerful motor you need bigger batteries because it uses more we electricity than a lower power motor and it is harder/more stressful for the battery to release a greater percent of its capacity over a short period of time. Another problem with phev vehicles is that most are not designed to be EV only. My Volvo loves to turn on the engine if it is remotely cold (high 40s to low 50s if unplugged all day at work). The engine rarely warms up. Long trips, yes it is gets up to operating temperature, but on most drives where it turns on (cold or for the last mile or two of a commute) it never gets warm (oil dilution???? with fuel and condensation). Anyone who then tells you to just drive longer than us necessary, burning fuel when it isn't really needed in order to warm up the engine properly can go F themselves. That is not the purpose of a phev. If you want to read more about this, check out the Jeep forums we ith the 4xe drivetrain and "FORM" (essentially an engine/oil maintenance process that in the cold takes away EV only operation due to fuel dilution concerns). The oil on my xc90 phev smelled like gasoline coming right out of the pump after 1650 winter miles and less than 20 gallons of fuel usage. (I am waiting for the Blackstone lab results). My current tank is averaging almost 200mpg, but in the winter it falls to maybe 50mpg with probably 5 to 10 cold starts per drive (direct injection and forced induction leads to cylinder walls being washed with fuel).

If they could make it with a big enough battery and a strong enough motor and a real EV only option that would only engage the engine upon wide open throttle, then a phev would be great. The Chevy volt drivetrain/concept was great, but most phev vehicles available now are HYBRID primarily with EV like operations possible if the right conditions are met. From May through late September I can spend most miles within those parameters, but it is frustrating October through April when the operations of the vehicle are slowly killing it (as designed).
I can see you have never driven the Honda clarity. Sad that they stopped making it this year but it checked very box you mentioned. Primarily a electric car with a Ice engine that can couple to drive train above 55 MPG. It truly is the best hybrid and Honda did not advertise at all

If I recall the Clarity was a hydrogen powered car, correct?

Our 2013 Chevy volt did that as well, though it would start the engine if the outside temp was less than 15F. This was easily solved by replacing the temp sensor with the correct size resistor. Chevy did not advertise that much either. I like the hatchback form factor but the size was a bit small if our family of 4 were to use it for trips. Chevy should have put that drivetrain into the equinox/terrain driving the rear wheels with electricity and the front axle through the convention drivetrain. They would have sold a lot of those.

Similar to @Atlee my PB gets as low as 9.1-3 to as high as 10+ if I lock out 9 and 10 and watch the boost gauge, and keep it no more than 65mph towing our 6klb trailer. This gets me 250-300 miles, but my wife and kids also don't have the plumbing to stay on the road for longer than that in an uninterrupted stretch. It's far better range than my tiny 20gal tank on my 2015 EB F150, however.

The main benefit we've enjoyed is powering the RV while boondocking or should we need it, our house.
