Another question: Based on the blinking blue light on the front of the unit, the comma is always drawing some battery power when the vehicle is off. How much of a battery drain? Does it shut off if the SOC hits a certain point? I was reading a discussion on Reddit about it. The post in gone but the comments are still there. Powering down the unit via the menu before shutting of the engine didn't seem to make a difference.

yes it monitors SOC and will shut itself down. The sunny Settings menu has a place to configure auto power down as well. The blue light is fed from a capacitor that drains about five minutes after power down.

Wonder what the reason for the discount on hardware. Sales slumping? Lack of ford support?

The sale was for all brands, not just Ford. In fact they are currently sold out of Ford harnesses, so they obviously didn't expect so much demand.

I guess I'm missing something. What is the path in the menu that configures shutdown? What I'm doing is shutting off the truck, tapping on the sunny settings widget--->Device--->Scroll down to the shutdown button, confirm shutdown.

I can hear the Comma powering down. Then, as you said, the blue light on the front facing camera stays solid for about 5 minutes while the capacitor bleeds out, but then it becomes a blinking blue light that never stops. Is it still drawing power at that point?

Settings --> Display --> Max time off-road.

It should have no power draw when turned off, regardless of light status. If you are really concerned about it, you can make one of the quick removal docks and take it out of the car when you aren't driving. You can also just unplug the cat5 cable and remove the OB2 adapter, then it will power down every time the car stops.

My comma 3x and adapters, cords, etc have been arriving over the last few days.. hopefully I'll get it installed Friday.

Has anyone tried using a Google Fi sim in the device? Any chance it can act as a hotspot to replace my ford/ATT hotspot?

..google gives me a free data only sim with my Fi phone line, and I read that t-mobile and att sims were used by comma, so hopefully the Fi ones will also work; it would be nice to save a few bucks and cancel my ford/att hotspot.

I have not tried a google Fi sim. I have one of the $10 T-mobile sims in mine. I imagine the google sim should work, although you might have to SSH in and add an APN.

I got my comma installed and running over the weekend.. very happy with the result!

The mount from @Ajzride makes for a nice clean install and a 6.6' usb cable is the perfect length.

At some point I will replace the comma cable on the device with something shorter for a cleaner look, but for now it works.

I had some difficulty getting sunnypilot installed.. tried the URL in the OP, and a few others, before bit.ly/dev-c3 finally worked on the third try. Some of my issues were probably related to my wifi connection, as I was trying to get it to download while driving home from Mt. Hood after a weekend of skiing

I am still waiting for a google fi sim to test, so that will come later. If anyone has any resources on how to enable the comma 3x as a hotspot, let me know. Since its ubuntu based, I'm sure I can find info when I have time.

Anyway, thanks again for the help, and if there is a better url that I should be using please post!

Once a 3rd party SIM is detected and active, you can turn on hot-spot from the menu (network --> advanced)

Can it connect to the vehicle's hotspot?

Yes, if you pay for that.
I have 2 cellular devices and hotspots active on both of my fords. Total bill for all 4 is less than $50/mo, so it's an easy option to take.

His google-fi sim is $0 (can't beat that). I have a T-Mobile SIM in a UMR which only sets me back $10/month. Went T-Mobile because I wanted an alternative carrier for when my phone or work hotspot doesn't have a great signal.

What's the data run on it? TMO has the fastest speeds around here. A clean signal delivers nearly 700Mb worth of throughput. The truck stays connected through some of the hills around here where the phone can't keep a voice connection, but does over wifi from the truck. ATTs 4G is like at best 80Mb. It'd be handy if ford released a compatible 5G TCU. F150 now has one (24s), 24 mach-e does not.

I did have the ATT hotspot in vehicle for the first couple of years of ownership, but have found that my Fi coverage (..a TMO MVNO) is generally as good or better than ATT in recent years, so i dropped the ATT hotspot a few months back. As far at TMO vs Fi, I use Fi because of the extra's.. free data only sim, more liberal data caps on unlimited (speed and total usage) both at home and abroad, and no hotspot caps. Tmobile is more liberal than most when traveling outside the US, but they do limit speeds; I took both a fi and TMO phone to ecuador awhile ago and the fi data was consistently much much faster (3g vs 4/5g speeds)
