I try to look ahead, maps is starting to get a little smarter in that regard. If I see a long stretch of red it's been habit to just repeat the destination instructing fastest route. Google as a company is just a mess right now given their internal ideological issues that have rotted them at the core level. Its cost them a lot of good talent. They invented the transformer ai model that's currently fueling much of the ai expansion, and they didn't really do anything with it. Some of the models they've churned out have been fed garbage ideology and have produced some really bad results. There is so much room for improvement with Google maps and other maps platform by including AI predictive features. What is missing from most IOS auto mapping programs is look ahead warnings of distant traffic or road closures. When Waze first came out they had look ahead alerting. This worked by looking down your current route 100 or 200 miles looking for major highway issues then giving you an alternate suggestion. Some mapping apps do this when you first enter the route but do not keep looking down the road for new events until you are almost on top of them. Now most mapping apps wait until you are almost up to a road closure before alerting you. Likewise AI could review your route and give you predictions of traffic based on historical trends and offer alternates. This would be very useful for situations where your route included passing through a major city during rush hours but you are still a few hours out of town, then plot a course through through or around a city that accounts for historical traffic conditions at the time of your arrival.
