Different items on different busses? GWM issue?

The gateway module is rather important providing communication between each of the discrete busses. Think of it like an ethernet switch that instead of talking to each computer, it talks to a bus that has half a dozen 'computers' on each one. The fact the GWM is showing up in there as well as different items on different busses seems to point at it specifically.....

That dang module is so mission critical to the whole truck assembly. Does make you wonder considering it gets so many updates and a "software bug" there could have you chasing rabbits so easily.

The situation at the moment of the frame was attempting to start the truck after work. This is why I think the PCM isn't being woken up, and the other modules read a default value of max, or 0xFF or what have you.

They have apparently replaced the GWM already last year. It threw more codes from additional modules that last time this happened (April 15). I didn't think to store a diag report, but got some screenshots while it was happening. Common theme might be the 12V voltage?

One other thing that has me curious... I've been stuck on 1.7.1 OTA for a while too. I have to wonder which module is causing that, and could it be contributing to *whatever* is causing this behaviour?

Apologies for the wall of text, I'm brainstorming in this post a bit.

SO another nice weekend parked in the sun and we get stranded. Thankfully, for whatever reason, we seem to be able to turn on some accessories (Air Conditioning) when it exhibits "Stop Safely Now" / "No start" conditions.

Lots more codes this time though, surprisingly. It seems like the actions taken by my dealer's service dept are altering the symptoms, so it's likely there were/are multiple deficiencies. One new permanent code that led me to look at a couple of published bulletins: P1A0E "Hybrid Powertrain Control Module - Motor Disabled". The 12V system is still suspect, based on data I was able to record while experiencing the problem. Multiple modules were reporting voltages under 12V: I was able to observe the IPC Module @ 11.6V, BECM Battery Voltage @ 11.9V, APIM @ 11.9V, Occupant Classification System Module @ 11.8V. I could not read the PCM or ABS modules' voltage, since there was no communication. This was after ~1 hour of highway driving, and then parked with both FOBs out of range of the truck for ~2 hours. After about 30 minutes, I was able to start the truck again. The only actions I took were to pop the hood and wiggle several points in the harness while watching multiple PIDs for module voltage fluctuations (there weren't any). Finally, I closed the hood and the driver's seat adjusted to the stored position. Whether that is coincidence, or the impact from closing the hood jostled *something*... who knows. I then attempted to start the truck from the FordPass app, and it was able to start on the second attempt (the first attempt had the driver's door open). Now, this is the first time that I've seen the truck display "Stop Safely Now" after a successful start. So I let the truck idle for a bit, very hesitant to attempt moving it. Stopping and starting a second time after idling for a few minutes, the IPC warnings were no longer present, so we drove home.

Now, watching those same PIDs directly after successfully starting the truck, they all read in the range of 14V (the DC-to-DC inverter actively charging the 12V system). Observing them again today, their "steady state" voltage appears to be around 12.8V.

I'll be having a rather lengthy chat with the service dept tomorrow. The code it stored yesterday allowed me to find a couple of potentially relevant bulletins: TSB 21-2072, and SSM50151. When I examined the wiring diagrams a couple of months back, I suspected a MOSFET on the BCM that sends wake signal to the BECM, SOBDMC and PCM. I think I was on the right track, but I also observed the PID for this Wake signal changing from position 2 to position 1 (MOSFET most likely is good) when attempting to start the vehicle. Now, TSB-21-2072 provides a key piece of information: "(SOBDMC), also referred to as the inverter system controller (ISC).".

I wonder... what if:

• there is a problem with the SOBDMC, or an attached module that it depends on
  • could this impact the DC-to-DC conversion, preventing the hybrid battery from providing conditioning of the 12V system?
  • how could this be linked to warm weather / a hot cabin
• there is a problem with the aux 12V battery, causing a rapid drain on the 12V system
  • there is no temperature monitoring on it, and there is no separate isolated voltage readout. it is located in the cabin, so potentially a poor connection, or failing battery could be adversely impacted by heat?
  • could it cause the PCM and other modules to fail to wake due to lower voltage? Not outside the realm of possibilty IMO; the PCM has previously stored codes about low voltage, and failed self-tests.

At any rate, I expect the plethora of communication failures are a symptom, rather than a cause. Now, conveying this to my service advisor in a way that makes sense and might actually be helpful... well that will be the next struggle

I didn't think to generate the fancy HTML report while it was happening, unfortunately. But all of the codes were present until after I drove the vehicle today. Now the permanent code is gone and MIL indicator is off.

I suspect a "Service Advisor" will have their eyes glaze over if a well informed/researched customer attempts to educate him/her.

And even worse, getting that same information to the mechanic/technician that will eventually pull your ticket 4 days later?

It's a lousy scenario these days.
If/when I am ever confronted with this alert, I will make every effort to diagnose, but more importantly, look for a work around to get the truck operational so I can get where I'm going.

Just went to check on it again after driving it for 3 hours earlier, and parking it in the sun in my driveway. It's happening again now, but not coming out of it. Significantly hotter today than yesterday. Also, I noticed the touch screen is uncomfortably hot to touch... I wonder if that could somehow be the silver bullet tying everything together. A short or something behind the screen when it's hot out.

One other interesting observation is that "Cannot recall memory position while driving" pops up incessantly. I wonder if the BCM is actually repeatedly attempting to recall the seat position, or if the message is popping up for another reason.

I think I'll need a GWM breakout box to be able to diagnose this further. It's terribly difficult getting info while it's happening when the GWM can't communicate with so many modules. At least it seems to be getting more easily repeatable now.

My service advisor knows my analytical reputation by now, and recently introduced me to their head electrical guy. We talked shop for a bit last time I was there, so I might be fortunate enough to get his ear again directly and hopefully fill in some blanks.

I just noticed the SOBDMC recorded P0A2F-94 "Drive Motor A Over Temperature". I'm treating anything that doesn't fall under communications issues as even more suspicious. This also has related TSBs that call for reprogramming of modules to fix... ?

Would be great if I could nail down a root cause. If I get to a point where I'm confident that this is something I can solve with a mongoose and FDRS... well, that might just be the justification I have been wanting for the past year. Can't let my confirmation bias distract from troubleshooting though

I still think there are 2 separate problems, however, I am starting to lean further into that both of them could be fixed by getting this thing up to date.

I *think* that the codes for "Drive Motor A Over Temperature" and "Hybrid Powertrain Control Module - Motor Disabled" are very much related. I think this is what is causing the brunt of my frustration, and what is ultimately resulting in the no-start condition.

Now, the piece I haven't confirmed yet, but I suspect that some part of the hybrid cooling system is impacted by a 12V drop, so on warm days when the system would require more cooling during operation, the hybrid components are not getting it. It's also possible that a temperature threshold parameter for this was addressed in a software update, and the overtemp condition contributes to the 12V drop somehow.

One thing that bothers me (after reviewing previous work orders), is when the IPMA was replaced the work order notes that the reprogram failed due to low state of charge of the battery... this leads me to believe that the service dept. is either unaware or is ignoring the requirement of external 12V supply to do updates. Maybe the IPMA doesn't require it, but it is worth an eyebrow raise.

To be clear, most of the hybrid components are on a discrete, low temp cooling loop. If needed, the AC is used via a plate heat exchanger to provide additional cooling. The electric motor on the other hand is cooled via the trans fluid. From everything we've seen thus far, the transmission overheats before the emotor does. You're the first case I've heard of anything in regards to the emotor temp. Given the long list of codes previously seen, it sounds more like a GWM issue.

The IPMA programming killing the battery is due to incompetence on the tech that did the programming. He didn't use a proper power source on the 12v system. About the only thing that tells us is that they're not using the brightest lightbulb on your truck.
