(Edit for clarification...)

Hey guys, so this is the second time this has happened. I fill up my gas tank which normally shows about 620 MTE (Miles to Empty). Today I filled up, 28.1 gallons and it said 404 miles, I drove to lunch, about 8 miles and parked, it said 432 miles. After lunch got in truck, said 414 miles, by the time I got home, about 11 miles, it said 440 miles.
The first time this happened I filled up my truck, drove 100 miles to move our son into college. Drove all over town, took him to lunch, drove back home another 100 miles and only lost 13 miles on my DTE.

My "average mile per gallon" is saying 22.3mpg.

This is the first time in 3yrs of owning this truck and putting 50k miles on it have I seen my DTE gauge not be somewhat accurate. The DTE gauge has always "reset" when I filled the truck up, always.
fresh MTE reset and coasting down a hill...
The MTE is going up and down all over the place.

Issue #2:
I told my Ford Service writer and he informed me they are now charging $100 per diagnostic??? So for them to look at this issue it may cost me $100 bucks?
Any ideas on the MTE issue?

Yes. DTE (distance to empty, not MTE or miles to empty) is based on recent driving. So if you drive with a heavy foot, then fill up, then start driving with a normal foot, your DTE will actually go up (or stay stable) as your most recent miles have been driving more economically.

In short, yes, this is normal, depending upon how you drive both immediately before and immediately after filling up.

DTE is never going to be accurate. Barely tapping the throttle is all it takes to change the current rate of fuel consumption which will throw it off.

Some manufacturers don't even show a DTE because its confusing to people. Hills, slopes, wind, temperature, trailing behind a truck/car in front of you, speed, stop/go, etc all will dramatically affect DTE

Happens all the time. Though it changes, it's always accurate.

Im sorry maybe my post wasnt clear. I will edit. But no this is NOT normal. Im about to tick 50,000 miles and this JUST started heppening, hence my post.

I do understand that MTE, DTE changes based on how you drive, but this is a dramatic change. I said this has happened twice. The first time I filled up my truck, it read 617 MTE and directly drove our son to college, 2hrs south, about 100 miles, drove all over town, took him to lunch before we headed back home, drove another 100 miles and when I parked my car in my driveway its said 603 MTE. So I drove roughly 300 miles and my MTE dropped 14 miles.

Doing other Google searches and even this forum it does look like others are having the same issue, there just does not seem to be a fix or resolve yet. I dont care and ignore half of the "big brother" crap on my dash, but I need to trust I wont run out of gas when my truck says I have 300 MTE.

@Tone, sorry... no...

Has anyone else experienced this where as you drive your MTE goes up? I'm not talking after a fresh MTE reset and coasting down a hill...

Yes, mine changes consistently as much as a hundred miles or so depending on driving (40K miles). Has your fuel gage been consistent? I usually gas up based on my fuel gage, not necessarily MTE since I've never trusted the MTE to begin with, accurate or not....Cheers!

Allan, when did that start happening, cuz this has only happened on the last few fillups, (that Ive noticed). Im certain it has to do with some OTA I got. Apparently Ive recieved about five plus in the last month.

@rugedraw Javier, how many updates is FDRS showing you on 1FTFW1ED9NFB50297?

I don't see how yours is acting up or why it seems different now. Mine has behaved like yours from the start. Its more prevalent if I'm driving city, then get gas then jump on the highway.

Actually just this past weekend I filled up on a Friday and it said 434 miles to empty, I drove an hour and a half on the highway and when I got to my destination (shore house) it said I had 561 miles until empty.

This appears to be just another "feature" that Ford can't make work properly, so there is no fix for it. In my opinion, Ford would be better-off building trucks with features that they know work. I am still waiting on yet another recall that they don't have the parts or the know-how to fix. Perhaps if they also sourced parts from known and tested manufacturers, their recalls and complaints would drop off considerably.

I am still irritated with Ford and my 2022 F-150. I will likely never buy another Ford product.

My FDRS license expired and I chose not to renew it. I can no longer check pending updates in PTS either. Unfortunately, I can't check for pending updates anymore.

Lets talk offline. Maybe I can make a donation. It would be cool to have for myself but I wouldnt get my money out of it like you would. Youve been a great contributor to myself and others with your scans. Maybe others can chip in also. What is ot, $900 annually?

When wifey lets me drive her car even if its full, its DTE is awful. Why? She drives 2-6 miles a day. When I drive it its all highway miles. So the DTE goes up for the first 50-80 miles of so then starts to drop.

DTE is a dynamic reading of whats in the tank, how you are driving. In my F150 I've seen over 900 miles.

The fuel gauge on my 36 gallon tanked truck has the top three quarters at 7 gallons each. The bottom or empty quarter is double that.

Thanks JJ, It could be the OTA, not sure myself. It's always been changing by at least 10-15% on MTE ever since I've had it...just chucked it off to my driving styles....besides, that number is not one that I watch a lot. Cheers and good luck!
