Left over 23 2.7

We are in the hunt for a new work truck and I came across a new 23 F150 with the 2.7. Looking for the good and bad reviews for this engine. Primary use is highway driving, outside sales.

it should serve you well. the 2.7 seems to be a reliable engine, gets good gas mileage. I bought a new 23 with the 2.7 in April after looking for a truck for close to a year and I'm happy with it although I haven't put many miles on it .

i have had a 17 and a 22 2.7. they are ok. with the 10 sp.. they can get 24/25 pretty routinely. My dad's 3.6 got 20 on a '23. Seems to me that the latest 3.6 is losing ground. the older ones he has had would do 21/22 pretty easy.

I am very happy with my 2023 2.7. Plenty of power, great transmission, consistently gets 28 mpg on my regular highway trips.

I too, will gladly vouch for the 2.7. It’s a great engine, is good on fuel, and the low end torque makes it enjoyable/fun to drive under normal circumstances.

It's a great engine. The part that worries me is the wet belt oil pump, which depends completely upon your use case. There is a 0% chance that belt causes an issue in the first 100k miles; beyond that, it will eventually give way and immediately kill the engine when it does. Belts aren't bad; every maintainable item ever built by definition has wear items. The difference between a good wear item and a bad wear item is 1) does it predictably last over a reasonable service interval (i.e. "<x% chance of failure before X hours or >Y hours MTBF") 2) is it sufficiently easy and cheap to replace after the above interval. These two considerations are interrelated.

Let's use a historical example so that I don't ruffle feathers. The Nordberg radial diesel was a monster: a giant radial 2 stroke diesel that could on the fly switch to natural gas and ran BIG generators and pumps in industrial settings. The gearing which connected the rods to the crank was a complex set of gears instead of the simple master and slave rods on most radials. The process for inspecting these gears was so complicated that several large users, including Alcoa, determined that it was cheaper to simply wait for the gears to fail with the rods subsequently grenading inside the crankcase, and then sending the engine off for rebuild. That is an example of a poorly designed wear item (in an otherwise great engine).

My advice is to ask the dealer's SERVICE DEPARTMENT to price an oil pump belt replacement. If you intend upon keeping the truck a long time, that number will be vital.

I've said 1,283 times that if they offered the 2.7l in Plat, 157"wb, I'd buy it all day long.
2.7l has PLENTY of HP and torque for the very few times I tow and would be a wiser purchase for my Home Depot, mocha and dinner runs....

Ford just wants to bundle the more expensive options.

I see zero reason to not offer every option for every trim level. They really should just be cosmetic not functional breaking changes with trims. I guess I'll keep dreaming.

Exactly, they sold Mustang GTs with convertibles and Fastbacks with 6 cylinders.
I want to get my mocha every morning and my gas gauge to say DTE 927mi ...

One thing to be on the lookout for on 23s is if they had them put into service for various things around the dealer. Your warranty could already have a year or more burned up. I saw one truck that had a year and 8 months left on the warranty.

Brand new no milage

Have not had one problem with the 2.7, had it in a 2018, 2021 and now a 2023. Tows great and still delivers pretty good milage and has plenty of power.

My F150 with the 2.7L gets better fuel mileage than my old Ford Escape with the 2.0L ever did. I have no problem merging onto the expressway and my only complaint is I rarely get to rev it out - it makes all of its power down low and I hit the speed limit before I hit the rev limiter.

I do notice that it isn't as powerful when I'm trying to pass at speed - but it's not like it's a slouch either. I also have hit the payload limit - but that was when I was packing the bed full of soil. Most days it's more truck than I need.

I do my own maintenance and the 2.7 is a treat to work on. Filter on top readily accessible, and once you get the hang of it, easy to drain without spilling a drop.

Four of us at work have F150s with a 2.7L - A 2019, a 2022, and two 2023s. Nobody has a complaint about their engine. One of the 2023s was bought with a 10,000 CAD discount - for that price reduction, the gains you get going to a 2024 are minuscule compared to the savings you get going with a 2023. Ford was promising quality improvements on the 2024s, but so far that seems to have not panned out. A Job 2 2023 should be as good as it gets.
