I’m ready to make a decision but stuck between the Lariat 502A and Platinum 701A. The Platinum is about $1,000 more, so I’m weighing the pros and cons:

• Lariat 502A: Includes the HUD (Heads-Up Display) and fixed running boards, along with the standard Lariat interior.

• Platinum 701A: No HUD, but offers Power Deployable Running Boards and a more premium interior.

Here are my thoughts so far:

1. HUD: How awesome is it in real-world use? I know it’s something I can’t add later, so I don’t want to regret skipping it.

2. Power Deployable Running Boards: I really like them and could add them later if I go with the Lariat, but the Platinum also has a nicer interior that I’d be missing out on. Is the Platinum interior worth the upgrade?

Are there other factors I might be overlooking that could help sway my decision? I’d love to hear from anyone who’s faced a similar choice or has insights into what makes one trim stand out over the other.

Get a 2024 King Ranch, has everything you want that the Platinum doesn’t, and costs about the same!! Even has a nicer interior!! Problem solved!

I am a fan of the HUD. Had it on a number of other cars many years ago and very happy to have it again... and on a truck!

I also prefer the fixed (extended) boards as I'm often using the rear part to reach into the bed...

Oh... and I wanted a V8 instead of one of those little 6 cylinder thingy's....so as a Lariat 502A owner I guess it's an obvious vote from me...

Easier to add power boards than HUD. And HUD is worth it IMO. Plus you can’t get a 5.0 in KR or Platinum. Nicer interior is relative. Personally I think they are pretty close in comfort between a lariat and KR/platinum. Sure no massaging seats but those are pretty gimmicky and most people only use them once or twice or to show off to new passengers. YMMV.

You can add aftermarket boards for ~1200 and change out the lariat's 'leather' as the seat's coffee piping is a literal PITA for some. Some nice aftermarket leather (besting the platinum's) for about the same price as the boards to make it more custom -- YOU MUST make sure that aftermarket leather is cooled seat compatible. A lot of it is these days, but do verify. Given the lariat and XLT use the same foam, lots of options on the table for this. DOES NOT APPLY TO LAY FLAT SEATS!

Thanks for the replies. Lots of good points. Definitely leaning toward 502A now. Another point for Lariat is higher payload.

Are they still charging more for “HUD enabled” windshields? I would look at that. Where I live the rocks for winter (damaged glass) on the road / snow/slush for power running boards, I didn’t get either for those two reasons.

Same here. I’ve seen too many trucks with one power running board permanently stuck open.

Last I checked, the bottom Lariat trim is ActiveX. The upper trim is still leather.

One of the reasons I went with the Lariat is the moon roof - I could order the 502 to get the HUD without moon roof. I did not want the potential for future leaks but most important was loss of head room. I need to fit tall passengers in the back seat.

The HUD was a must for me. It is one of the best in the industry, IMO.

It can't cost all that much head space, can it? I'm 6'2 (a 6'4 torso with 6'0 legs), and I had more then enough room in a Maverick with a moon roof.

Or are you running an NBA shuttle?

It does. You would be the shortest in the family needing to sit in the backseat of the truck. Plus any head room left over is appreciated when hitting bumps in the road/4WD trails.
