Any advice for removing these tabs on the back of the STX grill without snapping them for paining the colored pieces?

Small screwdriver or interior pick tools. Have to do a few at a time before you can separate. Take your time and should be fine.

i started digging into my xlt grille to paint the upper and lower halves the right way, but gave up after a couple minutes. same thing, didn't want to break the tabs so i've tabled it for the time being. let us know how it ends up going for you.

Just pulled them off. There are 4 T20 screws on the ends. Used a small flat head screw driver and worked from one end to the other. Came off fairly easily.

Torx screws (yes remove them first - above post) - but also you can take a heat gun/hair dryer to heat up the clips to make them more bendable and less likely to snap.

Edit: paint job above looks fantastic!

Start at the ends where the screws are. One tab at a time. Once you get the first one or two start applying pressure like you’re trying to pull it off. That should keep them out enough to continue. I used a small thin flat head screwdriver to slide in between the tabs to pry them open slightly. Good luck
