Ford is going to have some issues in the future with these lights failing in countries that require daylight running lights.
i would hope so, but they’re just gonna give the consumers the run around and force them to pay for repairs out of pocket.
that’s shafting loyal customers if you ask me ??

I've noticed it's been this style headlight, not the ones on the loaded Lariats, Plats, KR, and Limited.
Sadly when you buy a cheaper truck, Ford fills it with cheaper parts.

What he said isn't true. The "cheaper" trucks don't have the DRLs, so they can't fail if they don't have them..
The ones he mentioned (lariats, platinums, etc.) come with the "upgraded" headlights either quad leds or projectors with the DRLs..

These are the DRLs that are failing

I decided to turn off the DRLs but I like the look so I turned them back on. I did change the brightness to 10% via Forscan.

No, he's right. There are the bottom of the barrel trucks with no drl's, then there are the reflector style headlights with bulbs for blinkers. These come on your mid range or medium level trucks, like a tremor 401a. Then there are the fancy led projector headlights with dynamic bending. It's the latter that have the heatsinks and are not failing. The mid range ones found on the majority of F150's are the ones that fail.

so if it doesn't have a 402a package (like yours) it's cheap?

Oh ok so not "cheap" like you initially said, but cheapER.

I suppose you're right though as with the 402a, for $6K more, you get a good heat sink.
Yes definitely. I see why you gave me the side eye. I think my phone just autocorrected my swipe to text and chose cheap. I meant cheaper. I edited it now.

I didn't mean any disrespect to anyone not buying a top trim, just pointing out. If you don't buy the top trim, you aren't going to get the top leveled parts. I'm just beating a dead horse now, we all know this. Still shitty thru didn't include a heatsink when the drl portion is essentially the same.

It would be interesting to see the Ford representative that monitors this forum give a comment/opinion concerning the mass numbers of these DRLs that don't work.

For me, Ford's lack of interest in a speedy resolution of several built-in problems, including this headlight problem, in their largest selling (and most profitable) vehicle will cause me to consider other vehicles when it comes time to replace this F-150, which is my third one in the last 12 years.
1. 3.5 Ecoboost engine rattle on cold start.
2. 3.5 Ecoboost turbo failures.
3. Trailer Tow Max Duty bolt breakage.
4. lack of timely OTA updates.
5. 10R80 transmission multiple problems.

While some of these issues are being/have been addressed, they seem to be slow with resolutions.

I had phazer problems with my 2016 Platinum and traded it in when the dealer said they didn't hear any problem until it was out of powertrain warranty.

With their track record of dragging their feet on these repairs, I don't know whether I am willing to gamble on another F-150, or if I should take my chances with another brand.

I have seen the the burning plastic by LED's before. I keep saltwater reef tanks and one particular brand of LED lights are notorious for burning/melting the poly-carbonate lens array. So much so you can buy replacement lenses for about $6.00. I had to replace the lenses in mine at least 3 times on each light unit. Makes me curious if the DRLs that have not burned have a slight air gap between the LEDs and array bar preventing them from melting/burning. On the reef lights there was a mod some people did that added about 2mm gap between the LED and lens disk. With that no more melted lenses.

Could possibly do the baked headlight trick to soften the sealant up to open the housing and mod the DRL array to prevent it form being burned.

Autonation Ford Katy.
They are by far the worst Ford dealership in Houston... They will give any excuse under the sun to attempts to weasel out of warranty work. Since you're out in Katy, try Ryan Ford just out I-10 near Sealy.

That'll never happen.

BVesides 99.9% of the Ford rep posts are "sorry you're having troubles with your F150. PM me your vin blah blah blah" crap. End of the day it's nothing more than a waste of time reaching out to them because all they do is open a customer care ticket that does absolutely nothing to help the situation you may be having.

If mine break, I plan on cutting around the housing and polishing off the burned LED. Luckily I have the ESP until then.

Ford needs to at a minimum do a software recall to lower the brightness and lessen the risk of burning. I would be okay with it being slightly more dim if its never going to fail.

I wonder if this happens more in states like AZ supposed to NY?

I'd be willing to bet that the majority of lights that have burned are actually set to OEM brightness. Chances are it's more of a crap shoot on how they were assembled and how close the light array bars are mounted to the LEDs. Even at say 25% intensity the LEDs can and will get extremely hot and if the bar array is pressed right up against them, chances are it will burn/melt causing the exact same issue again.
